Its hard to find a good spot for a ground blind, so find the lightest climbing stand or hang on you can buy.

But another place you may want to check into for next year is Camp Bullis. Its a lottery hunt, but if drawn I believe you can find a location and leave your stand out all season.

Sommerville is public, so you have to pack out the stand or risk it being picked up.

Wouldn’t of been such a bad deal if the dogs only ran pigs and raccoons. But never did.
They were always on a bucks arse running him ragged. I had them and deer run under me. By location I seen them it would have been my guess it was a well known land/business owner in the Burleson Co area. Since late last yr and as of today have not seen nor heard them

I learned hard way. Deer hunters on Sville are worse than duck hunters when it comes from them following you and your vehicle.

I gave up, learned my lesson on ladder stands this year. To busy out there and too heavy. Will be back with a lock on and sticks I guess so I can be more mobile.

Here's a photo of the nubbin buck that I saw Saturday morning. Hopefully a bigger-bodied deer will move through at a similar range. Slept in and didn't hunt this morning, which was probably for the better since there were so many hunters out for opening weekend. I'll try to get in a few weekday evening hunts after work this week. I work in Caldwell and can usually get off by 3 pm.

I was 24 feet up according to the range finder. The next time I hunt this tree, I'll be aiming for about 20 foot because the tree was ever so slightly leaning and the floor of the stand ended up sloping away from the tree a little bit.

I've never hunted that high before, but it wasn't really that scary. This is the first time I've hunted east of IH-35, so before now I was just lucky enough to find a tree that was big enough and straight enough to hand a stand from. I was either on the ground or in a tripod, mostly.

I didn't see any deer yesterday. Had 5 hogs come to 5 yards, but couldn't draw in my new blind and they skirted me when my elbow brushed the back. Evening hunt was ruined by 6 pushers that got there at 6pm. Went way deep this morning to get away from the crowd.

I didn't make it out there this week. The **** hit the fan at work, and it turned into a very busy week. Oh well, hunting doesn't pay the bills, so I really didn't have a choice.

With the heat, the full moon and increasing acorns it doesn't sound like I missed out on much other than just being in the woods. Hopefully, we get a couple of nice cold-fronts before long.

Good luck out there folks.

Hello y'all, so it turns out that Somerville WMA isn't as far from where I live as I thought and I'm thinking about making the trek out there sometime soon. I have 2 questions though:

1. Do you have to be drawn in order to hunt deer? The TPWD public hunting annual book thing doesn't say anything about it, but from what I gather it looks as though it's allowed.

2. Regarding the 400 inches of hunter's orange, do you just go there rocking something like the following image, but draw some leaves or something on there with a sharpie? .

Sorry for the noob questions, where I hunt the regulations are different, like you only need an orange vest and a cap, and deer hunting is by getting drawn only.

No it's not a draw hunt it's a walk in area vest and hat is all thats needed please I'm begging you don't be a walk and stalk hunter the ragweed is to high for that you will just push every deer off there and if using a stand when you think you have found a gold area do a 100 yrd look to see if any other hunter is already set for that area don't set up right on them some of us have hunted it many yrs and I'm done with those people

Oh and at GD47: Definitely not gonna walk and stalk, I'll be bringing a climber and a good set of binocs so I hopefully don't won't encroach on anyone's spot.

Thank y'all for clearing all that up!

FYI, you'd be better off with a lock-on and sticks. Not many straight trees out there.
