I don't think it matters at this point...the real journalists are sticking together & slamming the NYT for picking up the ball & running. It now sits in their court & hope the pain of defending/hiding the source becomes very painful.

IMO the nyt just made a nasty skid-stain on the whole freedom of the press & all that it inherently stands behind & supposed to balance out. Actions have consequences.
