Default Big Thicket changing permits

Instead of waiting in line for a permit as usual, Big thicket is giving permits to everyone who applies. After June 20 you can go to the visitors center and recieve a permit. They will issue them from June 20 thru Feb 08. Most of these units are overrun with hogs. All of this at no cost!

Thanks for the heads up. I had sent her an email the other day and got the same from her. The office is on Hwy 69 and FM 4 something. I take it that is where the BTWA office is located. Set us straight on the location if you can.

The visitors center is on FM 420, About 4 miles east of hwy 69. FM 420 is about 10 miles north of Kountze or 25 miles south of Woodville on Hwy 69. It's really easy to find.

Hunting is limited to bow, shotgun and black powder. I've only hunted 3 of the units over the years. The Lance Rosier unit is vast with tons of hogs. I have heard it has some good deer. The Beaumont unit has some exceptional deer, 130" is not all that uncommon, but it is only accessible by boat, as is the Neches bottom unit. i usually hunt the Jack Gore unit, I have killed many deer and hogs over the years and this is not my primary hunting spot.
Hog populations are booming in most of the units, so much so that the NPS has extended the season for them. I'm not sure what you mean about typical east Texas hunting, I have hunted it many different ways and for the most part have always been succesful. It is not uncommon to see deer everytime I go out. The more you put into it, the better your chances are.
Hurricane Rita did quite a number on the woods in these units, therefore detering alot of hunters.

I have been hunting the Lance Rosier unit for about 13 years. Hogs hogs And more hogs. Sometimes they are hard to find but if you Are a dedicated hunter and dont mind walking then its not that hard. You can hunt archery, shotgun, muzzle loader, 17HMR. I use a remengiton 870 express with 3 inch federal premium 00 buchstot. I have killed around 30 hogs and about 10 deer out there hunting on the ground. I found myself more productive covering the ground.

Baygall where in the Lance Rosier Unit did you hunt?

I have a friend that had some land on Coe rd north of Kountze that backed up to the unit. I accessed it there. He sold it so I haven't hunted there in years.

Baygall is right there is plenty of wildlife in the baygall ranging from deer, hogs, and sqiurrel. Rita did do a number on all the big oaks so walking around is a little more difficult now but the animals are plentifull.

You can start hunting hogs on opening day of Archery season and also the opening of squirrel season.
