Another Montana bear mauling

We leave Sept 22 for a week in Idaho/Montana. Just last week my bro-in-law told me we will fish some on the West Fork of the Madison, between Ennis, MT and their place on Henry's Lake, ID. Today, he sends me this which happened near where he has been fishing.

Winner! I could probably outrun my bil but a couple of shots to both kneecaps will insure it...plus, he is almost 77...he doesn't have too many more years left anyway!

I have done a little research on what to carry in bear country.Most experts agree you are better using a gun that you are comfortable with and can get off as many shots as possible. There have been bears killed with 9mm and 45s.
I don't think I'd grab bear spray myself over a pistol.
