Wife was telling me about this earlier. Hard to contain viruses when we can get from one side of the world to the other in a matter of hours.

Every year there’s a new special flu. Ie: coronavirus, h1n1, bird flu, etc. Combined even they’ve never come close to killing as many folks as the plain old flu.

The normal flu kills tens of thousands of people every year just in the US and even more abroad. The new flavor of the month flu isn’t something to worry about by comparison.

Uh yeah, every year, all the nut jobs claim I got the flu shot and got a sore arm 30 years ago and will never get a flu vaccine again
Or they are immune to it till they get it and kill the baby or grandpa , or my kid got their autism from a vaccine so our whole family doesn’t do any type of vaccines
The flu can and will kill you IMO people who don’t get a free flu shot are a recipe for disaster
We forget about the pandemics of history where 25 million people die from the flu in a year

Hasn't been confirmed yet but the student just got back from Wuhan so seems likely. As others have stated though the flu is probably worse than this virus.

Probably nothing to worry about, but....

Article refers to a simulation for a "similar" virus epidemic that predicts up to 65 million deaths.

Are they 65 million in developed countries or crap holes like china?
I have no doubt that millions could die of the right virus gets rolling in the right place but doubt such a thing is really possible here.

The real question is why are we allowing Chinese students into the U.S.? There have been quite a few espionage cases recently perpetrated by Chinese students and professors, not to mention how stupid it is to educate the people who will go back to China and use the education that they got here to produce weapons and other technology to be used against us.

This one so far is killing about 1 out of every 33 of those that catch it.

Texas State News interviewed a student and he has the best response I've heard -

"A&M didn't send out a Code Maroon on this, so I'm not worried. They seem to have this under control."

I concur with him.

The thing you have to keep in mind, we in the US have a much better grasp on sanitation and medical care than nearly the entire world.

And yet the flu spreads here almost as fast as anywhere else. Once it is here and starts to spread, we don't have much to fight a virus, even with our medical system.

I'm supposed to be in Wuhan in March...

American Airlines is fighting with me about canceling our tickets saying that it isn't that big of a threat, they only want to refund the portion that would be a connection from Shanghai to Wuhan not the entire trip

Your attempt at humor was harmless and hit its mark....dang funny. If humor offends someone, it's much more likely that they didn't understand it rather than you intending offense. Some people just have a stick in their *** and they can't help it. You did nothing wrong.

I watched the Netflix show “Explained” and the episode was called Pandemic.

This had to be fore this virus. They showed SARS and H1N1 from 1918.

They talked about the “wet” markets in China where they have the live animals and then butcher and clean them all in one place and how it can lead or develop certain viruses.

Was an interesting show. I know that the Chinese have a distrust in frozen or other meat that they don’t know is fresh.
