Default South Texas Hunters 2016 Thread

This is the 5th annual thread. It's getting that time again to start doing some shed hunting and work around our places. Post your shed findings, rut reports, feed schedules, cheap corn prices, LPD'S or anything else pertaining to hunting in South Texas. This is also a thread were we can get info for people close to your place, and maybe we can lend a helping hand if needed.

I'm in Falfurrias off 285, and usually make about 6 to 8 trips a year to the ranch.

Looks like I'll be spending some time in Dimmit county in 2016.

2015 was good.

We had a weird year down south in 2015. very quiet rut, way too much water (unable to access protein feeders to keep them filled), way to green, big buck not moving much in the daytime, had a few up and comers really disappoint (ended up same size or smaller than 2014), had a few regulars vanish. But did have one show up that had been AWAL for 2 years. Chased a deer fro 3 months with no sightings (still have not seen hide nor hair of the deer), but did end up with a good'en, had 38inchs of mass!
Here's to hoping this year is back to normal.

Got my personal best in Webb county this year. The right G2 was 15" and he scored 145"

Tooth aged at 7+

Weight estimated at 200+

Hoping to outdo him next year!

The year is starting off good with a cumulative of 5+ inches of rain thus far. Its really starting to green up. Deer are browsing in the afternoons on the new growth popping up in the open fresh cut fields/strips. Cottonseed consumption is through the roof and parts of the ranch are showing heavy protein consumption. We are scheduled to plant 130 acres of warm season food plots this year. Let the rains keep coming.....

We are at the NW corner of McMullen County and SW corner of Atascosa county off HWY 97 just south of Charlotte.

We are pretty dry in Webb County. Deer are hitting the cottonseed pretty good right now. Protein consumption has been about average. Heading down to ranch today to do some javalina and predator control. The mesquites are starting to bloom. We need rain soon.

Western Duval going on my 25th year. We were fortunate to get a 1/2" of rain last week. Gave the browse a good kick start and we are seeing a lot of fresh browse. Hopefully we all get a good soaking next week. I'm hearing there is a pretty good chance. Deer are in great shape.

We're right across the highway from Big Mike and things are off to a good start.

I will say that I didn't see any of our bucks that were ran down real bad from the rut. Everybody still looked pretty healthy from what I saw which should make for a good start this year.

1.5" near Tilden last night! 2" on 2/22 and 1" on 2/23. It was getting a little dry down there but things are looking good and the mesquite should be greening up in the next 7-10 days now. Love this time of year down south.

Between Alice and Freer , starting protien next weekend.
Had bucks still running does the last weekend of MLD season...no shedders at that point but I've seen deer during our drought seasons with antlers all the way to end of April.. not sure how a good wet season like we has this past year will effect when they pop them this year.

Zavala County, between Big Wells and Batesville.
Ranch looks good as we have been lucky enough to get some good rains that have missed others (not making fun of you Peyton). Got another good rain Tuesday night after we left the ranch. Headed back tomorrow for a weekend of hog eradication. No sheds found so far.

I let several deer walk last year. Most were better than this one but for some reason I am the most excited about this big 8. He's been on the protein feeder every day so hopefully he will explode over the summer.

was on this forum some years back - just signed back up - I am on a Maverick Co lease with Shaun (Sable) and we have had this place 8 years. A LFence incredible ranch that he and I are "lease bosses" - I don't consider it being a boss but just somebody who is lucky to get to hunt an incredible piece of property with awesome ranch owners and some really great friends who get what trophy management and hunting is all about. We have a few bowhunters on our place but overall just some great deer hunters. I enjoy sharing information and ideas on how to improve a deer herd. Our eight years on this place is filled with some world class bucks being harvested - much work, much patience, and much fun. We just signed a long term lease so I look forward to learning from some other STex hunters in years to come - I also enjoy sharing things that have helped us improve our lease .
We have a shed hunt planned second week in April so will report on that

Cool where did you get the peas and cotton seed? Are you throwing the peas in a spin feeder or a free choice feeder? Thanks in advance. That 8 point is a hoss.

I moved back home for a job promotion and I boy am I glad I did. I have a house that is paid for and best thing is I live 30 minutes from our ranch in Zavala county. I hunted more this year than ever before and finally got my Pope and Young that grossed 140 +. We have received a lot of rain and I am starting to put out some cotton seed. I live in La Pryor if anyone ever needs help down this way.

I know it varies but on average when is the best time in April to shed hunt in South Texas? We have tried early April and late April - if you wait too long the critters eat them -

I think we've had 7" so far this year. Brush greening up and lots of forbs. Deer been hammering the cotton seed and about on par with protein consumption. Be down at the ranch tomorrow to top feeders off.
