            In my experience they will "bunch up" but they don't stand up like cobras before they strike. Their tails will stand up though.

            Awesome pic. Good timing to get his tongue out like that.

              Correct, the shot I'm looking for is when they are coiled they will sometimes raise their bodies up off the ground 8-12 inches and keep their head parallel to the ground. I've seen it multiple times, just not with a camera in hand. Maybe one day!

                          I have a picture of a big Prairie Rattlesnake doing that. I see them do that fairly often. They're a little easier to get riled up though. Just walking up on one is all it takes most of the time. Bigger snakes seem to try to get away but the smaller ones will stand their ground and strike repeatedly if they feel cornered. Diamondbacks have a good disposition for the most part. In my experience they'd rather just get away.
