Default What is a good sized 8 pt

I had this debate with a buddy of mine while we were making some jerky with my Illinois buck. What do y'all consider a good sized 8? Mine scored 128 3/8". He thinks an 8 isn't big till 140". I tried to explain to him what exactly it takes for an 8 to make the 140" mark. Please let me know talks opinion.

Anything over 110, over the age of 5. But that's just me. Ha!

All depends on where you hunt. I was on a lease where a 110 inch 8 point was a great deer. All in the eye of the shooter. IMO, if it os an aged deer, then its a good size 8pt.

A 130" 8 is a 140" 10 missing his G4s... I hunt in an area where a 130" 8 is a nice deer. I wouldn't give a **** what your buddy thinks but I am betting he thinks a 140" ten is a nice deer as well.

I like them mature too...

I'm happy with my 8. He don't score much, but he was mature. Shot was good and he died in sight.

I like that...

I wish more hunters would take that to heart.....there is more to deer hunting than a scoring system that rewards symmetry over gross.

A 130" 8 is a fantastic deer that many hunters won't have the opportunity to kill in a lifetime. You can't just make a blanket statement that an 8 isn't big until 140". Some areas just don't produce that caliber of deer. I killed a 144" 8 a few years ago and he was a beautiful deer, then the air was let outta my sails a bit when I saw a 200" 8 one of the guys at my local archery shop killed up north. If he's of age and he pleases YOUR eye, who cares what your buddy thinks?

An average 8 in Texas is probably 110 to 120 but for me a big 8 is 145plus. Our ranch usually produces 2 or 3 a year over 150.

X2

I am probably one of the most competitive people on Earth and want to playing any game where score is being kept, but the scoring system of deer has helped ruin deer hunting. I love to compete but when hunting the competition should be between YOU and the ANIMAL. Not between you and your buddy.

Any 8 that makes you immediately grab your weapon of choice is a big 8. If you have to sit there and think about it, you are going to be disappointed when you walk up on him. This is what I always tell anyone Im guiding. It pertains to all bucks not just 8 points. The answer to your question is a individual as it gets. For me, I had a goal of a 150" 8 point. After many years of passing 140+ 8pts and letting others shoot them, I finally realized it probably wasnt going to happen in the area I was in. I finally took one that was 145" and change and I couldnt be happier with him regardless of the score. I was very foolish for passing on some of those others because of their score. The deer in my avatar is a mainframe 8 pt. His 8 pt frame was 153, so I guess in a way I did manage to get one over 150"

Did you post the right pics? Are you sure? Lol.

130" 8 is a much better deer than a lot realize. 150+ 8 is a giant. It depends on the area. I'd smoke a 130 8 on our mason ranch. I wouldn't give it a second look up north.

I'm pretty sure we were looking at the "inches" side of the tape??? .. yes. All of our deer have to be scored. We're all reasonably good scorers. Pre-morning whiskey anyway!

When an 8pt buck (most common) gets to about 115", people get excited and can't lay off, regardless of age. Go to a locker plant and this is 75% of what you'll see.

to me any 8 over 125 is pretty good, 130 is a dang good 8, a 140 8 is an outstanding 8. Most will never have the opportunity at a 140" clean 8.

I don't care where you are hunting a free range low fence 8pt that scores over 125 is a big 8 pt and he will look dang big standing in front of you at 20 yards .. your not only losing inches as far as less pts but you lose inches in your last mass measurements and a lot of times the beams are not as long on a 8pt . I would be willing to bet the majority of people that have a shoulder mount in there house it is of a 8pt that does not score 120"

I have always thought that if fit in the deep freeze it was the right size. But I know what your asking. I'll go with 3 yrs old for non "Trophy" hunting like I do, score doesn't really matter to me.

Well that's all over the place on answers. I get it though. It depends on a lot of factors. Mine was a cull buck that needed to go. It made me grab my bow and it's in the freezer. Thanks for the responses. Here he is euro mounted.

I killed a 150 inch 8 a few weeks ago here in Missouri. There's a thread with pics if anyone cares to see it. But It takes a really good 8 to get to the mid 130s I think a 3 1/2 year old or older that's 120 or bigger is a **** good deer
