Default 2017 Panhandle Hunting Thread (5th Annual!)

OK boys and girls, let's get this shindig started!

It's time to pop a top on the 2017 Panhandle Hunting Thread. The rains have continued, the fawn crops have been by most accounts really good, and age classes have had another year to recover. It should be a great year!

Please post all your panhandle hunting observations, successes, whatever... I know it's early but post 'em up when you can! The season is just around the corner.

Best of luck to all the Panhandle Boys and Girls! Here's to a safe and successful year! Godspeed and safety to all.

[Cue: the requisite disclaimer...]

NOTE: Occasionally, some folks have wandered into the previous years' threads in hopes of exerting influence on how panhandle deer hunters should manage their herds, and belittling those who disagreed with their opinions, i.e., shooting does, or not. Those posts were reported and removed.

While that argument may have merits in another management thread, it has no place in this thread. Like past years, any hostile posts (management or otherwise) will be reported and removed as the mods see fit.

Let's just keep this thread about soaking up the great outdoors, enjoying time with family and friends, and counting our everlasting blessings. Of course, LDPs are always welcome, if not mandatory.

If I had to draw a line, I'd say Childress-Yes, Quanah-No. But I don't think anyone around here is going to draw too many lines or split too many hairs. Post 'em up. Welcome!

Great vids. That's what it's all about! My daughter (11 at the time) also shot her first deer last year at our place in Hall County. Made my entire season.

Thanks for starting it back up kry. I'm in for the fun! We went back to milo in our food plot this year. About to plant some oats and turnips. All of the horns I've seen in Hemphill county look great so far!
Got the hernia fixed last year so I plan on getting back to the bow this year. We still have a lot of work to do before season starts.

Folks, hadn't heard much about it, but it looks like Turkey got hit by a tornado last night. If you're of a mind to, I'm sure the affected wouldn't mind a prayer or two thrown their way.

TURKEY STORM DAMAGE UPDATE - We have received some pictures from our Storm Chasers Bryan Leeper and Jeff Moore, along with a pic from Crystal Velasquez Fuston, of some of the damage to the city of Turkey. Bryan and Jeff report that power is completely out in the city and that there has been extensive damage to the Allsup's (shown in Crystal's pic). Some homes have suffered extensive damage as well, but the good news is that NO injuries have been reported! We will continue to keep you updated as we get more information!

Prayers sent and hope everybody in Turkey is doing ok.

But this guy.
Content to run amuck in my feed pen, he goes right over top of hog panels.
Cannot wait to hear the opening click of a large mechanical parting his ribs.

Clark,

it may be just perspective of the photos, but it looks like that buck lost a bit compared to last year. Are you thinking he will finish as strong as last year?

I don't know, might have gotten a little heavier?
This 8 pt runs with the best buck in the pasture.
And that big buck has regressed, I'm pretty sure.
We didn't get rain for much of the growth period.

We've been getting timely rain for the finish and the big buck isn't as far along.

Will post pictures of him tomorrow.

Maybe Jeff will chime in, but I recall him mentioning 2012 recruitment was near 0% around here.

2011 and 2012 recruitment were both sub 10% north of Childress where I hunted.

2011 recruitment was pretty much zero in most of Collingsworth County, 2012 was better (maybe 15-20%), but still low. 2013 was back to normal. So there are plenty of 4 year olds running around, but 5 and 6 year olds are well below normal levels still.

Also, we have had a very dry summer up until a couple weeks ago. Lots and lots of cotton was plowed under, just didn't make it. But it has finally started raining now. We have got 4-5 good rains the last 10 days or so. Here in Wellington we got some last week, enough for me to plow getting ready to plant food plots. We got 1/2" the day after that, then 1.3" Sunday night, and then another good rain (not sure how much yet) last night. A lot of that rain hast been pretty widespread across the southern panhandle.

It is pretty early to plant fall plots, but I am tempted to go ahead. Really tempted. Concerned it will get too rank later on if I plant now though. If it was Sept 1rst instead of Aug 15th, I would roll with it.

2011..Thanks for keeping me straight, Jeff.

This buck has been around a while, he's got me figured out.

First to drop, last to finish.
He drops his antlers around Christmas.
Losing that left eye, too.

No guess on where he will finish, but he is looking good. I think time for you to ground check him this year.

I'm gonna have to get some cameras out soon. May see about getting some out on Friday. IDK, need to go call some coyotes and shoot some steel too. Maybe I can work it all in.

Should start seeing some pretty good bucks again this year, a lot of them were still a bit young last year. Next year should be really good. I was chasing a good one last year north of the river, but in all honesty he really probably needed one more year. He made it through season though so I will really be gunning for him this year. Anxious to see what he looks like now.

We worked on our food plot today. I had some black eye peas planted in the two rows of milo. They didn't do well so we fertilized, plowed it up and planted radishes in place of the peas. Oats and turnips will be planted in a couple of weeks.

Dang how many acres you got there? In food plots that is.

You may have so many deer over there that the peas got killed early by deer. Or maybe that hot, dry July plus deer?

I put trailcams out sometime last week.

Looking forward to another great year in the panhandle. The rains last week filled up all of the tanks and should have put some great moisture in the ground for the wheat.

It's about 3 acres. The heat and deer got them first and then the bine weed took over after it started raining. I wanted to leave them but I was out voted. Lol
We sprayed the bine weed a few days ago. That stuff is hard to kill!

Yeah, funny thing, deer actually eat bind weed. Probably don't like it as much as peas though.

They love bind weed but they love milo more! We sprayed the whole patch because it's taking over and it dies with a hard frost anyway.

Running a camera now and just planted a small plot with oats, sugar beets and clover. Glyph'd the planting area and road waited 2 weeks then hand broadcasted seed along with triple thirteen. I then weedeated the dead stuff on top of the seed for a good layer of thatch on top. My place is a small pasture adjacent to a large winter wheat field. Coincidentally the day I threw seed the large field next to me was being planted with the wheat. Now just waiting for the rain this weekend to do the rest. I do not have a tractor so hand tools only method was used. Will post results if any. Wheeler / Gray County area.
