food plot / cut for hay

I have never put in a food plot. I have 2 situations that I was thinking about. If it get too tall could I plant something that I could cut for hay for our cows. 2nd idea was if it gets tall, I thought about turning calves in on the food plot to mow the plot down. THis is all once it gets developed. I have spoke to people in the past that plant wheat and oats that they graze through the winter for their calves. I figure if it lasts for them to graze then it should be there for deer as well. Couple of questions. what would be the best to plant in this situation (remember I have 1000 acres of wheat across the creek from me). It is north of abilene.

I hunt NW of Abilene with wheat around me. If yours is more in thick mesquite they may be more comfortable with wheat at your place. If not you may have to try something different. If your field is big enough you may try a cotton farmer. I see lots of deer around me in cotton fields once they are harvested during winter.
