In southwest Mills haven't seen much of pre-rut action but should start picking up. At our place it really gets going about the 3rd week in Nov and usually starts slowing 1st week of Dec.

Our bucks in Mills county are still in bachelor groups for the most part.

Work kept me busy until yesterday afternoon, so this is my first sit of general season. The deer are spooked already; stopped counting rifle shots heard at 20. Saw a real nice and wide 10, but he never stopped moving around and never gave me a shot opportunity. He took off when he heard a shot pretty close.

Not seeing any signs of the rut; but I've got a couple of does and young 8 out in front of me now.

Don’t know about Mills county, but San Saba and McCulloch counties bucks are very receptive to rattling and chasing does.

I just returned today from Mullin/Priddy area. They are still chasing and cruising. The first round peaked around Halloween and appears to be slowing some now. Bucks are broke up bad, a lot of broken tines and more this year. Lack of rainfall maybe. We are at 23" for the year. I killed a big mature 7 a week ago that was in love for the last time. And our resident 7-8yo mature buck, Halftail, broke off his whole right main beam and some on his left.

Last weekend I started seeing some scrapes and a few rubs. Had a young 6 point absolutely in love with a yearling doe. Wouldn't leave her alone for anything and was stomping and trailing her with his head down and nose up her behind. I think these next 2-3 weeks are going to heat up literally and Thanksgiving week should be prime time. I plan to hunt all around that time this year.

Picked up my meat from Wesley Head in Goldthwaite last week and was very happy with his work. If you are looking for a processor in that area give him a try.

His summer sausage is so dang good, also had hot and regular German sausage made but haven’t gotten into it yet, I’m sure it will be great. They really are nice folks in there and have great customer service. Plan on taking him a doe or two as well.

The German sausage is some of the best I’ve had. Try the jalapeņo and cheese sausage.

I too just picked ours up from Wesley on Thursday.. really like his stuff so far. I was lucky enough that they were having an event when I dropped off the buck to try everything he had. Great Jalapeņo cheddar and German sausage.

Checked my cameras while I was out there and still a ton of doe.. I still have an old 7 I want to take that is showing up but seems like the regulars aren’t there like before. Still seeing the bucks together on camera

Daughter shot a doe in bow season. Had the entire deer done in German jalapeno and cheese sauage. Extremely happy with Wesley's work.

My son and I hunted opening day weekend on our lease just outside of Goldthwaite. On Saturday morning, we saw a lot of does, a 6 point and a 4 point - neither of which met the AR. On Sunday morning, we saw few does, but quite a few bucks. We saw a nice 10 point, a spike, and the 6 point. I also saw something I've never seen before - the spike and 6 point were in the feed pen eating when a young doe approached the spike. She then bent her head down and smelled the spike's "junk". That spike jumped and looked at the doe as if saying: "My mother warned me about does like you!" He then ran out of the feed pen and into the brush. The doe looked at him for a moment, and then walked over to the 6 point and started eating. A few moments later, the spike emerged from the brush and started walking up to the doe, but she had no interest in him. We ended up shooting a nice, old 8 point that had a couple of broken off brow tines. I guesstimated the dead weight at 150 lbs. His internal spread measured 15.0 inches.

We are going to try again this weekend. Hopefully, the weather will be a bit cooler - hunting deer in 90 degree weather ain't a lot of fun.

Regards,

Dave

Bucks were locked up with does last weekend so things should be trailing off this week but still going. Some of the best hunts I have had are at the tail end of the rut when the big boys are cruising looking for the last remaining does. Hopefully we get some cooler weather this weekend.
