Default 9/22/2017 Update

My dad finished planting one of the 3.5 acre field today. We put out 16-20-0 fertilizer at a rate of 75lbs/acre and put out oats, wheat and elbon rye at a rate of 150lbs/acre. We seeded fairly heavily because when we broacast we lose some to birds. After seeding and fertilizing we drug the entire field. The weather forecast shows 30% chance of rain on monday, 80% Tuesday-Thursday and a 60% chance on Friday. They are forecasting anywhere from 2 to 4-inches. Let's hope they are right. Bring on the rain...

Here's a picture of the field:

We will plant the other 2-acre field and the 1.5-acre field this next weekend. We're ready for bow season.

I hope to have some trail camera pictures to post up this weekend.

Looks like what any Texas hunter could every dream of. What a blessing. And you're clearly a great steward of the land and generations will benefit from the dedicating and hard work.

Thanks for your kind words. We really enjoy doing things to help improve the property whether that's doing food plots, reducing deer numbers, supplemental feeding, spreading native forbs/browse, etc. I really hope that the food plots get some rain and do better than last year.

Default Update_10-1-2017

My brothers and I bow hunted this past weekend and I was able to shoot a cull buck. The first morning was pretty active, but the next two hunts (PM & AM) was very slow. There are acorns everywhere out there and it's still very green. We ended up getting 1.5in of rain out there so our 3.5 acre plot is starting to pop up nicely. Here are some pictures of the weekend

It's very difficult to get native deer in that to hit 150.
We hunted 1100 ac in Blanco for 20 years - saw 4 killed 1.

Yes, we have the 11pt at 5.5yrs and are going to give him one more year.

Here are the bucks we are targeting this year, which are mostly culls or bucks past their prime:

This is an old 8pt, probably around 6.5yrs+. We have pics of him going on 5 years and he goes from 7-points to 8-points every other year. Never seen him in person.

This buck is 7.5yrs. We have pictures of him going on 6 years.

Name: Old 11pt.jpg

This 11pt is 8.5yrs+. We have pictures of him going on 6 years as well and we thought he was 3.5yrs the first year we saw him. He looks younger and younger every year.

This is a big bull of an 8pt. He is at 6.5yrs+ as well. Lots of history with him as well.

We have a lot of great looking 2.5yr olds through 4.5yr olds that we are excited about. Just trying to remove some of these older bucks/feeder hogs.

Well, it doesn't look like it's gonna get much cooler over the next couple of weekends. I was hoping it was gonna get cooler this next week and more rain would come. I hope the food plots hold up. We got 1.7" of rain on one plot but it seems that it's going to be in the high 80's for a couple of weeks without any rain. This is where I wish we planted with a seed drill and had some good thatch on top of the soil to preserve moisture. We'll see how well they hold up over the next couple of weeks.

FarmLogs shows we got 0.40in of rain last night. I hope that's correct bc the plots needed it with these high 80's/low 90-degree days recently.

I monitored that shower that popped up just west of our place, dusted us then went right over the San Saba towards your place. I don't think we got much out of it though. There was another good rain just at the Menard/Mason county line that went north.

Default 10/24/17 Update

We shot a couple of does this past weekend and I shot an old 11pt that we have pictures going on several years. The 11pt looked younger and younger every year and he never had a big body:
Name: IMG_7027 (Medium).jpg
Views: 333

We think this is the buck that had a growth on his face in 2012, which we though he was a 3.5yr old back then but who knows. Here are some previous years pictures of the buck i shot:
Name: Buck History.jpg
Views: 319
Size: 109.4 KB

We found one of our 10-pointers dead in the middle of a field. before I saw his teeth, I thought he was a 6.5yr old based on previous years pictures, but his teeth look like a 4.5yr old. Here are some pictures of him over the past couple of years and a picture of him in velvet this year with poor body condition and a picture of his teeth:

To be honest, we haven't done much fishing in the river. We had some friends stay out there that caught some catfish, but they didn't throw out any lines or anything. I'm sure there are some big ones in there. Some of these pools are 12-15ft deep.

I have a question about our 3.5 acre food plot. It was looking great after the 2" of rain it got in late September but the warm temps and no rain for nearly 4 weeks has caused it to all to burn and turn brown. If it rains will it come back or is dead? We planted elbon Rye, wheat and oats.

Have you checked for army worms? I was in Menard and Kimble Counties last weekend and there was quite a bit of moisture in the soil where I was. I ask about the worms because I saw quite a bit of wheat ground that the worms had gotten. They'll turn it yellow and it looks dead above the ground, but if there is still green going into the ground, it will often come back.

We haven't seen any worms in the two weekends we've been out there (10/13 & 10/20). Here are a couple of pictures of the field on 9/28 after received 2in of rain:

What’s the latest date we could re-seed? I was going to try to broadcast elbon Rye and wheat on top of the plots and then take the disk and drag over the fields one time. We will only let the disk go in the soil around 1.5” to help cover the seed and then use the drag to smooth it out. I just want to make sure these two grains will still grow. From what I’ve read, we should be fine but I wanted to get yalls thoughts on this.

Default Water Trough Trail Cam Pictures

We set up a camera on one of our water troughs last time we were out there (10/22). I'm not sure why the time on the camera is off. I could have sworn that I set the time correctly, but I obviously didn't. Here are some pictures of the critters that showed up:

My twin brother was out there opening weekend of gun season and said it was really slow and really HOT. I really hope we have better luck in the weather department next time we are out there. So far this year, we have missed every cool front. It's been in the 90's every weekend we've been out there.

Well, i have given up on the food plots this year. It's been very dry this fall. We re-seeded with Elbon Rye and disked them under about an inch around the beginning of November but I doubt we get anything to come up with how dry it's been. We will be out there all week this week. We are hoping we can do some rattling and see some chasing. It seems the younger bucks are still dominating the feeders so we are corning all of the sendaros tomorrow heavily around the gun blinds to see if that will help attract does, which in turn could attract some bucks. Good luck to everyone this week/weekend. I will post some updates later this weekend.
