40+ yard shot with an old bow. The deer dropped and spun the opposite way at the sound of the release. My snuffer lodged in the base of his skull and dropped him right there.

It was not my intention, and I was very lucky it didn’t wound the deer.
I did also many years ago. Quartering away shot at a doe with her head down under a feeder at 20 yards. She lifted her head and dropped her body. Heavy broadhead blew through her spine and nearly decapitated her.

Made that same shot on a javelina, at 5 yards, it was instant death, but it was a javelina and it was 5 yards, I would never attempt that on a deer

for sure--if it was intentional. Not defending the shooter, but all of us have had -- or will have -- a bad shot/hit. It is the nature of the hunting game.

Probably involved a quartering away shot.

I have seen arrows end up in very strange places including very deadly head and neck shots. They were not typically the intended target. I have had animals move and deflections that caused some bizarre hits. I truly hope this is one of those cases.

I've killed two deer with a bow with neck shots. Both quartering and both jumped the string. Wasn't where I wanted the arrow to go but the deer went where I wanted them to go. In the freezer.
