So, recently with life being a whirlwind, I’ve got to missing campin. I used to do it all the time as a kid, and as an active duty soldier I spend quite a bit of time in the field out in the middle of BFE. I mostly will be doing a lot of it in Kansas but will also be coming home to Texas and doing it on leave as well. I am really interested in a bushcraft style of camping. I’m not saying minimal equipment or anything like that, but what kind of equipment would you bring? I’m going to start off going to common camp grounds and once I become more comfortable with doing it on my own, I’ll branch out to public land and what not. So my main thing here is, what would you bring with you? Do you have any good stories, memories, or advice?

Going to try the tarp method this year to try and prep for the Colorado mountains. My advice based on limited experiance is to get your sleeping gear situated while camping in the common camp grounds... Additionally, water filtration/purification will be important as you know once you get away from the regular camp grounds.

They have all kinds of neat equipment these days that makes packing much easier than the old days. I would put together a chest to keep all of the essentials in one place and water proof them. Since you mentioned staying portable, Four season tent, good sleeping pad, good mummy sleeping bag, portable stove (jet boil maybe). Hammock as mentioned if you are in an area with trees.

Don't know if we do the same type of camping.
I like a big tent, cot, sleeping pad, and to be comfortable.
I got to rubber maid containers that hold all my camping gear. Pots, pans, over mits, etc.
First year we went the wife wanted to save money and just use items we already owned in the kitchen. Made packing so much fun.
Now when we go, not that we've been in a long time, I just pull the tent, tarps, rubber maid containers and we're set.
Once camp is set we're free to hike, fish, or just be lazy around camp.
Sounds like you're looking to do more of a bivouac style camping.
