Ok so here’s the story! This is the property I grew up hunting. Over the years it has gotten worse and worse for deer hunting. 3 years ago was the last time I shot a deer out here and have seldom even gotten any pics of deer, especially in daylight. Just too much human activity I guess. A few weeks ago I decided to move my cameras away from the feeders since the deer don’t really come to the feeders any more anyway. Last week I checked them and was surprised at the fact there was actually a few deer moving in daylight. I hunted all weekend out at my lease and had no intentions of hunting today. I went out this morning to check the cams and had pics of deer moving really often through one particular area. It’s kind of funny because it’s only about 50-60 yards from one of my feeders and have never gotten a picture of any of those deer at my feeder. After seeing those pics I wasn’t sure if I was more excited about setting up a treestand or opening up the box that Sacajawea was shipped in. Well as soon as I opened her up and put her together I went and set up the treestand. Due to the shape of the tree I had to set my treestand a little higher than I’m use to.
After a little shooting and tuning I decided I’d give it a whirl. Made arrangements for my parents’ to watch daughter for a couple hours after I picked her up from school and the next thing you know I’m way up in a tree swaying in the wind. Had some turkeys walk by but never came into range. Shortly after I had a doe walk out and almost came into range but changed her mind and circled around eating fallen leaves along the creek to my west. She circles around directly downwind from me and meets up with 2 other deer. Luckily the Skunk Fusion works great and they start meandering my way. The only problem is they are DIRECTLY behind me. It’s like they knew it too because they kept serpentining as they got closer so I kept having to look one way around the tree and then slowly swing around the other side as they changed directions. As they finally get within bow range and I’m trying to get into position for a shot the momma doe looks up straight at me and give me the “I just busted your ***” stare! But at the time, due to the elevation, I wasn’t sure if she was the big doe or small doe. I didn’t have a clear shot at her but I did at the closer one. As they started walking away the darker one gave me a quartering away shot. The arrow hit about 3” higher than I wanted but it dropped in it’s tracks. Even though it was a steep angle and figured it was a good shot into the lungs a flung a finishing arrow. As it turns out it was a button buck and not a doe. Meat in the freezer is always good, especially on my first day shooting Sacajawea! I’m using full length Heritage 150s with 150 grain 4 blade Magnus Stingers. Total arrow weight 520 grains.

Default The Travels Of The Bow Sacagawea

New update on my arrow setup! After dropping my daughter off at school this morning I thought about running out and trying to kill a turkey with Sac. Then I remembered I have a dentist appointment this morning so I decided to tune a little more. My arrows were hitting pretty good yesterday but werenít exactly flying like Iíd like to see (20 mph winds didnít help). Iím really particular about that so I did a little more tweaking and now Iím shooting full length arrows with 125 grain points. Lucky for me I have a couple 2 blade Magnus Stingers, a couple Woodsman Elites, and a little Simmons Landshark that I killed a really big hog with years ago. This bow is shooting great which is kind of funny because at my draw length it feels like Iím shooting a toy bow.

I decided to give her a slight temporary makeover. I decided to add a little meat and some slight palm swell to the grip. Itís just tennis racquet wrap so itís easy to remove but Iím not real used to the small low wrist grip. She is shooting great for me now! I decided to bring her out to my lease today and hopefully draw some more blood!

Just an update, Me and Sac are getting along just fine. Just need the animals to cooperate. Hopefully I can get in a tree this evening if the Direct TV guy gets done in time. Headed to the lease tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully I can put something else on the ground while I have her.

I took her out this past weekend and hunted from Friday evening through Sunday evening. Got skunked on 3 sits and finally started seeing deer around mid-morning on Sunday. Ended up only seeing a few scrub bucks. I did make a good stalk on some fighting tom turkeys. They didn’t know I was there until I tried to step around some bushes to get a clear shot at about 15 yards. Looks like I get her for 1 more weeked and I’ll be sending her to Yleecoyote23. I’m gonna try to hunt by the house with it tomorrow evening and then head to the lease Friday morning.

Hunted this morning but the only thing I saw was a small buck before daylight. Now Iím in my popup in an area where lots of deer congregate under some live oaks. The blind isnít brushed in but it didnít seem to matter last weekend when a lease-mate was covered up with deer and killed a nice 8 point from this spot. I donít have a good wind direction for any of my other setups so weíll see how it goes.

Got home and checked the bow out, them grabbed up a handful of arrows that were lighter in spine than my normal arrows to see if any would fly good or not....

They all flew fairly well.....I have settled on some really nice wood arrows that Jeffro (Jeff Murray @ 10 Again Arrows) built for me 10+ years ago....they fly REALLY nice and the Broadheads hit right with the field points....so I will use these if I get a chance to hunt with Sac....

A little about myself:

I am married to Marisa (7 years) and between us we have 5 grown kids and 8 grandkids....they make me proud!!

I am a stroke survivor (nearly 4 yrs now) and feel VERY fortunate that my recovery has been pretty good....aside from a speech issue and some weakness on my left side, I am nearly 100%...

We work and live at The Univ. of Texas McDonald Observatory (5 years now)in the Davis Mountains. My parents live near here and it is a joy to be here close to them. I had lived and worked in San Angelo for 25 yrs previous to that. Our kids and grandkids are all still there, so it is nice to go back and visit often.

My start in archery came in the early 70s when I got a fiberglass Bear Bow set at S&H Greenstamps for 3 books of stamps....if you don't understand what that means ask an old guy.... It came with 3 arrows that didn't last long, so I learned to make them out of willow branches or any other "semi-straight" branches I could find...

Then in about 1979 I got my first compound...it was a Bear Polar LTD and had WAY too many pulleys and a steel cable that ran between them....from then on, my Trad adventure was on hold until around 2000 when I took a Bear Grizzley on trade and started playing with it....

I killed my first trad mule deer with it and was hooked.....since then I have owned nearly 60 different bows (I'm a lefty so was easier to buy them than find another lefty that would let you shoot them), everything from Habu's to Blacktails to Wes Wallace Mentors to Black Widows....I have sold most of them, but I still have a Sarrels Blackhills, a Pronghorn LB, an Acadian Woods Treestick LB, and a Black Widow SAX, along with several other Bears and other bows....I also have a bow that was given to me by Mark from Hawaii (greywolf) that will never leave...

I haven't gotten to hunt in the past few years due to my health, but I am hoping to get out there in the next few weeks and see if I can get some meat with Sac...

I will try to get some pictures of some of my hunts posted if I can get them off of Photobucket and onto Imgur....

My first mulie with my Bear Grizzly...also the first in a Guillie Suit (WAY TOO HOT)

The last mule deer with a compound

Some trad bow kills over the years

This was a 7 Lakes Bow Blank that I built/finished....Great shooting longbow...I still have it, these are the arrows that Jeffro built for me that I will be using with Sac....this bow matches up with Sac pretty well, not cut to center, and about 49#@28

Spent a big part of the last two weeks with Sac in my old Double Bull (one of the first Matrix 360's from 10+ years ago) ground blind.....
Saw a few whitetails but was really hoping to get a shot at a mule deer.....season is really short (ended today 12/10 in fact)....
We had tons of snow Wed-Fri and some REALLY cold temps. It got down into the single digits for a few hours Friday morning.

By Friday evening the temps had gotten into the 40s and I think it may have even gotten into the 50 on Saturday, so things were WAY warmer in the blind Sat and Sun and the snow had melted in most places...

So, this morning was my last hunt for a while and I figured I would take pretty much whatever came in....the cold weather has the bucks jousting around and sniffing does so I was hoping something would come through...

About 8:30, this big bodied 8 pt white tail came in.....really close, got a quartering away shot at 12 yards from my blind.....shot was a little back of where I was looking, but I watched him go down in less than 50 yards. When I was cleaning him up, I had managed to get both lungs. He broke my arrow as it went thru.

Got him back to camp and iced down and headed back to my blind to put in at least a few more hours before calling it a day and get loaded up.

Was eating my sandwich when a small mule deer buck walked out of the brush....right behind him was a bigger older buck stomping and "herding" the smaller deer....I guess the younger buck was trying to move in on the older one's does...they marched right in front of my blind and I got a good shot on the bigger buck at 15 yards....He went a little farther than the earlier deer, but I was able to find him about 100 yards from my blind. I couldn't find my arrow in the tall grass.....but the Ace Broadhead did it's job!!

So it took some patience and LOTS of sitting (and UNBELIEVABLE amounts of luck!!), but the mojo on Sac finally paid off!! I really grew to love this little bow and it feels great to sit in a blind and actually hunt again after so many years recuperating.....

Just got a new phone...sorry for poor quality of pics....hopefully they turned out where they can at least be seen.

I will be contacting the next guy on the list and will try to get it sent out soon....

I hope to get to hunt some more this year!!! Nice to be "back in the saddle again"!!
