Wonder how many acres of land they will need to steal for this new rail system.

I'll add, once the rail system is completed, the bed wetters will begin to complain they were inconvenienced because they had to wait at a train crossing and demand a complete shut down.

Obviously, you can't replace roads with canals.... Rail cost would be interesting to compare. You couldn't have a spur to every place of business, of course, but I do think a better rail network would benefit the economy. Trucks will be the king of local runs for the foreseable future, but saying that anything but truck is inefficient isn't true.

One of the reasons rail isn't utilized more is because the appropriate infrastructure doesn't exist. If it did, things might be a little different. Walmart ain't gonna build the tracks, but Walmart also didn't build the interstates, highways, or feeder roads that they use every day.....

Companies like Walmart didn't build the highways but do pay for new ones and the maintenance of existing ones with tax dollars and DOT fees on their fleet. Rail is good for bulk goods coming off the ports and plants, minerals, grain, steel, etc... Commuter rail for an example has proven to be wildly inefficient with a 2 to 1 subsidize rate on the dollar.

Durable and non durable goods will always require trucks on the highway.

Maybe we should be working toward getting 18 wheelers to run off propane or natural gas

Gonna have to have a lot more fracking to get at that gas

There is nothing in your house that doesn't get there by way of trucks. It would all be sitting on a train or boat if not for trucks.
