November Col. Elk hunt advice needed

I put in for a cow tag in Unit 76 in Co. 3rd rifle season. This will be my 2nd Elk hunt. I will be staying at the Freemon Ranch and hunting out of there every day.

I need all the advice I can get. Dont want to come home light again.
    Please GS, help me out.

I spent a good part of my early years fishing and hunting that area.
I hung out with Kirk and Ken and the Ellison family.
Killing a cow should be a slam dunk.
They should have horses to pack out if you kill in a hard to get to spot.
I would look up Fern Creek, Box Canyon, Engels Gulch, Texas Creek, depending on whats left after the fire. Just below Bristol Head just off 149 is a good easy area to hunt. Long Ridge behind the camp can be a good place as well.

Thanks TexasTK. How hard is the hike to get away from the easy area or to undisturbed cows? Are atv's allowed off the roads?

Atvs usually have to stay on the roads unless your hunting private land......most units like this in Co...make sure u have some gators for your legs. might be some snow. good binos and a flat shooting rifle that shoots good out to 400. i just moved from colorado back to my home state Texas...2 good things that i liked about colorado only 2. muleys and elk thats it...thats all..and since i was active duty i got to kill both for around 40 bucks....prob wont ever go back...

Most of those places are accessible by vehicle on forest roads to the trailhead.
You will need to hike into those areas to hunt. All of those areas can be hunted on a day hunt. Pretty easy hiking. Due to the fact it is a draw hunt I doubt you will see much hunting pressure. Good luck and if need more more info. don't hesitate to ask.

Ok, here is my situation so far:

                      Gators-buy
                      Boots-buy
                      Base layer-buy

Have decent glass-Nikon binos and scope
                      Ruger M77 7mm Mag-tack driver

I have started doing squats and walking daily.

Do I need a pack frame or should I rely on pack horses if I down one in remote area?

Can I carry sidearm while hunting in Colorado?

                      Anything else?

Best base layer IMO would be first lite...hard to beat that merino wool
