Default 21 y/o son can't find a job

So I've been on my son pretty hard lately to find a job or go back to school. He keeps telling me that he's applied at all these different companies. And has not got one call back for interview. But then I read all these other stories about employers not able to find people to hire. Don't know who to believe. What's the deal.... Ok rant over.... Thanks

Most stuff is online now a days... sit over his shoulder as he fills out an app...see what he is writing. I have found that they have a somewhat different interpretation of things...

Not a new dilemma.
I will add my 2 cents here. Sometimes you have to make yourself- Employ-able. Give the interviewer a reason to hire you, not on false pretense, but a real reason why you could do the job or be the person they are looking for. In my experience the last few months of looking for the right guy, we have talked to several who will literally talk themselves out of the position. That, and actually showing up becomes an issue.

I am currently in operations management. I literally cant interview and hire enough people. I probably push through 20-30 interviews a week trying to get people in. My problem is everyone wants to work 8-5 Mon-Fri and make 100k a year.......

No, but I've had a job since the age of 14. Always.
He has had numerous job offers in this thread, no experience needed.
I'm not picking on him or you. There will always be a job for those willing to work.

I would guess he started with a job, worked hard and moved up. Too many 21 year olds donít want to follow this plan. I would hire 30 people tomorrow if I could get that many to show up for interviews.

Career choices narrow down the jobs for those who want to work at a certain job. Not many youngsters want to really work anymore, and lots of them in their thirties ain't worth a crap at what they do, but hold a job anyway because people need positions filled. I come from the construction industry (excavation) and half the equipment operators working today I wouldn't have hired. At no other time in my life have I seen more incompetence than right now.

The last part has nothing to do with the OP, just an observation....

My advice would be go to school. He is still young enough where he won't feel out of place. Any degree is better than no degree at all, especially if he does not have work experience.

Were you having this conversation with him when he was 18 or just having it now? Sounds like he needs to do both, IMO.

By 21 if he doesn’t have a degree or job experience he’s telling lots of employers that he’s not up for much of a commitment.

Hope the story tells otherwise.

No excuses to not find a job. He must not want to work. Fast food. Walmart. Whatever. There’s someone who will hide him if he really wants a job. Gotta start somewhere. Shoulda had him get a job at 16 and learn to work any job. Oil and gas is hiring like crazy. Construction. Painters. Dang near everyone is hiring.

Sounds like my BIL. He’s 27 now and hasn’t had a job in 5 years. Tells his parents, my in-laws, that no one is hiring and he’s applying with no call backs. I know companies that I refer to him hire people daily. Problem is he doesn’t want a job. mainly bc they keep footing his billls and “allowing” him to be a lazy POS.I hope you can right the ship soon with your son. If not, he’ll end up job hopping for ever making minimum wage. So many have said it already, kids his age and up to my BIL want a Tuesday thru Thursday, 10 to 2 job with a 100k salary. Have no want to or will to get out there and eat their hands dirty.

Same here, mine goes to interviews once every couple weeks. He gets hired on and two weeks later quits and is interviewing again. I donít understand but if my sister does then there is nothing I can do... I like him just canít figure that part out.

Having to pay rent, buy groceries, and pay the utilities bills can be a big incentive to get a job.

Sometimes coddling the young folk by allowing them to lay around the house is not the best for them.

Sometimes? If that's not 100% true it's close.

Not saying this is what's happening with your son OP, but I know it happens.

Good luck helping your son get started somewhere. If he has the drive to work hard and learn he can find something in this economy. Please update us if he lands a job.

Hope he finds work, and does good.

I'm in the oilfield and heavy construction business as vendor. If I had a dime for every time the manager or company man asks me if I know anyone to hire, I could retire. I typically dont recommend folks, but I might could help.

If he aint found nothing soon, send me a PM.

Military is always hiring. I joined the Army at 23 because I didn’t want to go to college so I had the Army train me to work on medical equipment. Now, over 20 years later, I have a great, in demand career making great money. Have him look at options for training in the military.

My dad made the statement once that "most people are looking for a position instead of a job"

Not saying this is your son's case but most people have to start out in the trenches and work their way up into the better jobs

Back to college, trade school or military would be the options I would give if a job was not acquired in 30 days
