Default Her first hog! “ Go BIG.... or go home”

I’ve let her shoot... a bunch from traps. It really helps the language barrier between us. When I say shoulder to a 7yo and they point to the knee.... there’s a problem. But she has it down and I trust her point of aim. But she hasn’t “hunted” a hog yet... her own hog!

Sunday afternoon I checked a remote feeder that hasn’t been hunted in months. Pulled card and had a boar that was a regular to say the least. 8:00am, 12:noon, 6:30, midnight... every day.

I showed Lola the pics and ask if she wanted to shoot it? (I honestly thought he was 115-130 lbs boar) so I wasn’t to interested in bow hunting it. She was all about it!!! With softball and dance and birthday parties.... my weekends are toast and Tuesday evenings are about all I got.

I decided to use an hour I had to burn and set her pop up in place. I knew from the frequency of pics and him being wet in afternoon pics he was bedding in the creek 75 yards away. Wind was perfect to sneak in at 3:00 and set pop up. Quiet as a mouse. I got it set in a thicket and used hand pruners to cut a small hole to feeder 45 yards to the east.

I get home and take my thermal off ( that was tough) and put her ziess back on. Loaded 2 and shot at 50.... 1 hole dead center GAME TIME!!

I surprised her picking her up at school and we went home and knocked out homework and chores and changed to try our luck.....

Feeder spins at 5:30. I wanted to be in blind at 5:20.... we got to gate at 5:34 (women)

I forgot to mention:

Being a good guide, when I set her blind I put our chairs and her field pod in the blind.... she’s 7 and tiny. She MUST have the field pod and chair... and door is zipped closed.

We park the truck about 300 yards out because I know he’s bedded between us and we have to basically walk past him. Somehow we did. I don’t know if she’s that loud or my sense of hearing gets that good when in sneak mode.

As we approach the last zig in the trail I motion her to stop so I could check feeder.....$&@%

HES THERE!!!...... now what?

I snuck back to her and said “he’s there”...
-Lola “so I cant shoot it... I guess you can shoot it”

I can’t “see” it but can “see” it enough to know he’s there (still think it’s just a average hog). I tell her “ we have to get to that blind... or go home and try again. I’m not shooting it.” He was waaay to patterned to bust or for me to shoot it...

Here where this hunt blows my mind:

Lola- “ lets sneak to the blind”.....

This hog is under 40 yards feeding... the sneak to the blind in approximately 20 yards... through a trail I pruined in brambles, green briars and dew berry vine.... with 3” of dead leaves.... sure. Me and a 7yo can pull this off

I take a step CRUNCH, and pause. He’s still feeding...
I put her muffs on her and I carry the gun.

I hold her hand and she steps in my steps when I step as I look at the hog feeding. We are 35 yards with no more that 5’ of foliage between us in most spots. When we get to about 7 yards out I go into a crawl And she followed... berry vines were 100% still there.

Holy &)&%! We are at the blind... the blind with her stuff... with the &@$^ing doors zipped!!!

This sneak took probably 5 minutes and my legs are torched. I unzipped the blind one tooth at a time. No joking took 6-7 minutes. Then when he turned she hopes into blind. I stratled the door and adjusted the field pod. Just the he turned away and I took that opportunity to climb in too

WE ARE IN THE BLIND!!!! unreal. Pig still at 35-40. I open the window and pull her ear muff back and say “ stay ready to shoot, I’ll tap your shoulder when it’s time”... “ok”

Seems like another 10 minutes before he got positioned.... tap tap......BOOOOOOOMMMMMM!

Instantly his head slammed the ground and he did his impression of a wheelbarrow, and was out of sight in 5yards. I seen the impact PERFECT! and the front end was totaled out! She was fired up (me too)

We waited 15 minutes and went to look. I told her there won’t be any blood and if I can’t find it that’s ok you did perfect and I saw the hit. IT WAS PERFECT.

Under the feeder I see his skid marks but he had 3 trail options.

Now when I say this is thick... I just got back fro south Texas javelina and hog hunting and tracking through that hell and I’d walk it naked before this mess of $&&%. It’s impossible!

I crawl every trail there and leave her sitting under feeder. No way a kid can walk this. I’m bleeding from everywhere. ZERO. NADA..NOTHING.

I know she smoked it and it won’t bleed but he ain’t going 50 yards. I’m mad now. I’ve tracked hundreds of hogs and I can’t get on this one. If go back to the feeder and she ask “ did you find it”.... no but you did perfect

Tears... “but it was my first one”... &$&*
Daddy gonna find it. Had to channel my inner slap-a-hoe Indian heritage. I squared up on tracks... trail left and right.. nada a jungle of Hell straight that a lizard couldn’t get into. I walk to the wall and see his track!!!!

I payed on my belly and used my Binos and I’ll be dang 20 yards black hair!!!! GOT EM!!!!!

Took 15 minutes to get to him and another 5 to get her where she could take her pic!!!

She’s still on cloud nine. I couldn’t drag it anymore but can get my winch to it now and drag it out and weigh it tomorrow. I knew once in the blind he was either a different hog of double my weight guess

A MONSTER OF A HOG!!!

Lola’s first wild hog!

Pics to follow

Didn’t have huge cutters for size. Top worn BAD but bottom not too big

I’ll get weight tomorrow

I’ll guess 210-225 ish

Not bad for a 7yo girl on a sneaky Indian hunt

Yessir, you couldn't walk up and stab him in a much better spot. Where did she learned to kill pigs? Don't think her dad has ever shot one.
