Default academy gun pros

so yesterday im at academy, at the gun counter waiting for one of the guys to bring out a fishing pole they were holding. There is a customer next to me that brought in his AR and is working with an employee. From what i overheard, it sounded like he was having issues sighting it in and the employee was trying to figure it out. I looked over...looked like a basic 1-4 scope.... let them continue the conversation until i couldnt take it anymore....finally had to lean over and say...."hey man, your scope is on backwards" to which the employee says "oh ya, and that could be an issue too"

Typical Academy. I’ve had to step into a couple of conversation when I couldn’t take it any more.

You can bring in your gun to the counter and show it off? I'll have to try that...

As a former Academy manager I can agree with this. Not possible to hire pros for $9/hour part time.

They were very clear with me about not bringing a gun back if I had issues. I think there was even a sign, lol

I've worked PT at two different Academys...it's scary sometimes just how little the folks giving advice actually know.

They will not let you exchange firearms. They will help you by returning it to the manufacturer for repair.

As a former academy employee myself, I can say it’s bad in everyone’s part. Starting with managers, there’s no training. The short time I was there I heard some “incredible” stories lol
To be honest, I’m not sure what was worse, certain customers that come in or the fellow co workers hahaha

Good to know! For some reason, I just can't imagine hand carrying a weapon into an Academy. Even though I wouldn't hesitate doing that into a regular gun store, Academys just feel different. Like brandishing one into walmart. Even if you bought it there, they wouldn't be happy about it.

All you do it let the clerk know at customer service, they'll have someone from the gun counter meet you at the front and walk the gun back.

Yesterday I went to our local Academy to take advantage of the veteran discount and get a case of 20 gauge. They didnt have any out so I had to ask. I just got a blank stare when I asked for a case. He didn't know what a case of shells was. Sad.

It’s not just the gun counter at academy. But I have been to academy that has had some good help. A couple months ago I was looking at new electronics for my boat. So I’m standing there looking at a some units that cost $1000-$1200 and the whole time this sales guy just looking at me. Then two guys step up and is looking at a $100 reel. He turns and ask them if they need help. He hands it to them and proceeds to take it to the front desk. When he come back, he said he would be back. So I continue looking for a couple minutes and I decided to move on. About 20 minutes later I am getting some stuff in the reloading section when he sees me and ask if he could help me. I politely say “ NOT ANYMORE”. He looked at me like I was the dumbazz.

I bought a new fishing setup and noticed the 10% off for vets, flashed my retired ID and bam. If I'd have thought about it, a case of 12 gauge would have been in the cart too.

Guys and Gals, don't over look the discount for vets.

I try to get advise and help from the older gentlemen behind the gun counter, if he has a properly trimmed beard or mustache, all the better. The young punks who treat the gun counter as being varsity quarterback of the department store are just to much. You know what I mean, they usually try to show off by wearing a shirt 3 times to small to show off how "swole" they are. As if that has anything to do with knowledge of guns. Okay rant over...lol.

I had one guy claim he shot 5k .223,5k .308 and 20k 9mm a year. That was the guy behind the counter. He would of spent his annual salary on ammo.

The scope and rifle were probably bought at Academy and they mounted the scope for the buyer.

Recently had a young spec ops wannabe working there that had one of those tacticool 12 ga resting over his shoulder. He proceeds to turn away from me to talk to another employee about some task he himself screwed up which pointed the dang thing right in my face. I called him out on it. Loaded or not don't point a gun at people, and don't be playing with them at work. About the time he wanted to have a little attitude, the other dude steps in and basically tells him to get it together or leave. Most of them don't know squat but this moron took the cake.

I look at it this way, when I go to academy, I know what to expect. I am on my own to find what I need, and I will not get any meaningful help with anything that I don't already understand. I go there because the price is generally the best in town, and the price that I pay for that is customer service and staff expertise.

Very funny story, in HS I was at our local Academy. An older gentleman was looking at handheld GPS units and the dude behind the counter was trying to explain them to him (not doing a very good job). I politely chimed in and helped clear up the questions the customer was having. Meanwhile the dept manager came over and saw this, afterwards he asked me if I wanted a job there. I just turned 16 and was looking for a part time job, so of course I took him up on the offer. Heard many good stories the 2 years I worked there...lol.

That is most certainly true.

One of them gave me a price match on an online deal that I found on Slickguns. He didn’t even bother to notice the sale/deal was expired.

$375 for an XDS45. That was a good day.

I had the need for an emergency bow press... So they had the pleasure of touching my bow the week before season a few years ago. They told me they couldn't touch it because there wasnt a stop on both cams. I had to Google a photo for those idiot to listen. Idiots is an extreme understatement to say the least. Lol

its a shame what Academy has become. I worked there throughout high school 96-00 and started at the store on Mason rd in Katy that was connected to the corporate office and warehouse. Back then we would have trainings on products at least once a month and it helped a lot. I came back after my freshman year of college after they built the big new store off grandparkway and everything had changed. New managers, no trainings, nothing. I corrected my new "manager" ( respectfully) for telling a customer some wrong info and the next day they had me come in at 5:00 to stock the shelves and work the early shift. After the stocking was done and right as the store opened they called me in and fired me. lol
