Default Sam's Club vs. Costco - Help Me Decide

Currently have a Sam's Club membership, but a Costco is opening up closer to the house. I have never been to a Costco, and am hoping you guys can tell me if it is worth switching to Costco. Also, what is better about each store. Have any of you made the same switch and regretted it?

We shop at Costco. Haven't been in a Sams in a long time. I would say costco is a little friendlier and cleaner. Their prices are better than HEB by far. Produce is the only thing that is hit or miss, you may be buying 10lbs of onions but about 2-3 are bad already. Most of the refridgerated stuff is pretty good. I think the regular membership for costco is $50 and Sams is $100, that was most of our decision.

We shop at SAMs here, but, that's cause there is no Costco. Missing it after we moved from San Antonio. X2 on the produce comment from fullsizeaggie

Take an objective look at what each store carries. I think Costco has a better quality produce and meat department, but we ended up going with Sams. The reason for us was simple; Sams carried more of what we wanted a membership for. Sams has our dog food, paper towels, toilet paper, etc that we use most often, and Costco did not carry the specific brands or products that my wife prefers.

Don't go to either just because of distance but I watched a thing on the CEO of Costco and was surprised.. People criticize him for not outsourcing jobs, he is the CEO and makes under 500k a year which I know is a lot but I also know he could make a lot more if he wanted..

I let my Sam's membership lapse a couple years ago and shop solely at Costco these days. Both are in fairly close proximity to my house, but I never encounter the frustrations checking out at Costco like I used to at Sam's.

Costco in my opinion has cleaner stores, friendlier and more helpful personnel and if there are lines at the registers they open additional lanes vs. standing around watching customers stack up.

Costco is actually pretty good. Nice vegetables and fresh fruits. I ended up going with Costco because they sold things regionally located for each of their stores with great prices. They also carry a wide selection of household goods and decent quality products.

There is not a Costco close by, and Sam's just opened in the neighborhood.

Since they opened that is the only place I buy gas. Once a month go and stock up on dry goods.

I have both. Some things I get from each.

I actually had a Pace Membership Warehouse membership back in the late 80's, when we lived in Georgia. SAMs bought them out. Pace was better than both SAMs and Costco.

I like the Costco because it is close and I have the Amex rewards card with my membership. I get 3% back for gas and dining. Sorry for the advertisement. I am sure Sam's has something similar. I do love the meat department at Costco. Also, every time we go in the kids have to get a hot dog and coke for $1.50...

Don't let the numbers cloud that. His "salary" may be less tha $500k, but his total compensation package totals nearly 5 MIL. Granted that's still 15% less than walmarts' CEO, but it's probably proportional.

This. They kind of carry different stuff. I prefer Sam's over Costco. The meat is a higher quality at Costco, but much higher priced too. It all comes down to preference

I have both. There are pros and cons to each. Costco is a little nicer but the crowd in the parking lot every day is crazy. We really just use them for diapers, wipes, toilet paper, paper towels, etc, mostly dry goods. I do like the softball filets and thick cut porkchops. I probably use SAMs more often because I can get in and out in half the time I can at costco.

I have had both but I prefer Costco. If you are not 100 percent satisfied with anything you buy take it back. I have returned several items and I have never been questioned or hassled in the least bit. Their employees have encouraged me to try new products and told me if I do not like them they want me to bring them back. Customer service is top notch

I agree with Landover, we used both, Sams for work items because they carried more bulk items we used for work and Costco for personal use. Costco seems to have smaller quantity items of good quality.

Costco treats their employees a lot better and you can tell the minute you walk in the door. And they will take anything back if it breaks.

He also said the rich don't pay their fair share in taxes. Then he promptly borrows $8 billion to to offer a special dividend at the end of 2012 so they can avoid paying the tax increase on dividends.

Don't get me wrong, My company just finished the refrigeration system for that warehouse. It's our 4th new Costco store this year. But don't think for one second that Costco is any more ethical than WalMart. They also only promote from within. Most of the employees have been there for a long time. I'm telling you from all my dealings with them, I think they are a cult.

But the warehouses are very clean and have really good meat.

It seems that Castco has more higher in products. The stores are very clean & their bulk items are not as large. I was impressed in the only one that I have been in. It's the new one just Past Sugarland going toward Richmond.

We quit Sam's for Costco and do not regret it a bit. Costco is cleaner and staff is nicer. The AmEx card was a plus too, and also Costco carries name brand clothes at discounted rates where Sam's doesn't.

Conversely Costco pays way better than Walmart which prides itself in part time help and below poverty wages. No I'm not a liberal in the least but I do know that Walmart wants it all for themselves.

Walmart wants it for themselves? Not sure where you are going with that but to each is own. Have you ever owned a business? If so your answer might be a tad different
The link was for people to see where there yearly dues go etc. If people want to shop at Costco then shop there but don't b*** when certain parties make certain descisions. Thats all I am saying

At one time I had memberships with both. Definitely prefer Costco. However, at this time, I only have a Sam's membership. This is simply due to there being a Sam's very close to me. The nearest Costco is across town and not very convenient for me. If they opened a couple more locations in the Houston area, I'd probably drop Sams and go back to Costco.

I have had a Sams membership for a long time. Stayed with them cause I added my in-laws membership to mine and they have no costco in Green Bay.
They recently told me not to pay for their membership this year so am thinking of switching to Costco.
I dont have a problem with Sams as far as what they carry but am sick and tired of getting hounded each time I checkout to upgrade my membership for more savings. I already pay to shop there, that should be enough.
