    M1 Garand Question

I was given a M1 a few years ago. I’d love to be able to shoot it, and after doing some reading I’ve read that I cannot shoot new factory ammo out of it due to risk of damage.

What ammo is perfectly safe to shoot out of it?

I buy my ammo in surplus cans that the clips come already loaded. I haven't bought any in a couple years though.

I used to look at surplus ammo sites and Midway USA always had it.

The garand was designed to use M2 ball ammo, using a specific gun powder burn rate. Most modern ammo uses a different burn rate that causes higher pressures the operating rod can't handle. PRVI makes a 150gr FMJ load that is loaded to garand specs. Federal did at one time. You can also get an adjustable gas plug for it which bleeds off excess pressure allowing you to shoot most commercial ammo, but they have to be dialed in with that specific load.

That is a nice old rifle, beautiful. Enjoy it, it should be a great gun to own.

Most ammo is safe. Don’t buy any high power loads and you’re good

I had one for many years and even killed a couple of deer with mine. I hand loaded for it but the extractor would just chew up the brass. Fun gun
