    Gerber or Benchmade?

Bigger blade and nicer/cooler looking on the gerber. Tanto style

Benchmade is smaller and plain looking. Drop point blade.

    Both same price, go!

As a Benchmade owner I would go quality over quality and buy another Benchmade.

Benchmade all day. I havent been happy with Gerbers for quite awhile now. They just dont hold an edge anymore. I am a Kershaw fan. I got a Kershaw for Christmas 5 years ago, and to this day I have not had to sharpen it.

I don't know what hardness Kershaw is but I sure do dread sharping one. Got to be one of the hardest steels out there and will stay sharp through a lot of use. Gerber not so much. Don't have any experience with Benchmade but would assume it's something along the lines of upper end Case or Buck.

Benchmade no question. The axis lock is the best locking mechanism among folding knives and they use superior steel in nearly all of their knives.

Before anyone can even answer this in an educated way we need to know the steel the blades are made of. It's probably a safe assumption that Benchmade has a higher grade steel, but maybe not.

Also, if you are the type that uses your knife as a prybar and screwdriver, the Gerber may be a better choice, but again dependent on steel variety

Looks like Benchmade are listing their steel as 58-61 hrc. That's pretty darn hard if it will hold an edge. Hardness does not necessarily mean it will hold an edge but they seem to have a good reputation.

In my opinion that's not even a question. Benchmade in either steel is superior to the 440, unless you use your blades for things other than cutting/slicing
