Heck, Rick. You make it sound almost reasonable.

Cost seems practically do-able; shot distance is the most surprising, though. Reading all the compound guys' info makes one think that you have to be ready to shoot 40-60 yards out. I'm sure Fred Bear and Ben Pearson could do that, but I wouldn't necessarily want to try.

Also, sounds like having some flexibility on other game tags would be helpful. Regarding elk you passed on, what factors were you basing that on? Antlers? Pack out feasibility? Time of day? Impending weather? Just curious.

We did the DIY route up north and west of Pagosa near Williams Creek Reservoir. Tags were much cheaper then. We were a group of 4. About $500 in expenses not including tags. Lots of walking. Seen some elk. Killed a couple with a rifle. Big army tent we stayed in. Had a port a potty in a tent. Lots of walking and a bunch of fun. But it was tough hunting.

Ellis, every time I've been it has been with guys way younger than me, and they wanted to run the rims as hard as they could go.

Every time I let the young guys run their marathons without me.
I just scouted around for the first couple of days, picked out 2 or 3 spots that looked good to set up on for ambush hunting, made some simple ground blinds, and just started rotating going to them for the day. Seems to work for me, and ain't all that hard on ya to do.

Rick, you have this all wrong! You need to roster at least two young bucks to do all your meat packing for you. Let them run themselves ragged going steep and deep, while you saunter into a nice ambush spot and zip a nice bull. Make sure they sign a meat hauling contract while you're at it! Hahaha!

Like the idea of being where the elk want to go instead of chasing them.

Ok Rick I am old enough . The pines in the red lake area has been killed off by powder post Beatles . So sad I could hardly stand to look at it. Don't know how that affects the elk but what I wittinessed last summer. They are everywhere in the state . Don't know why they don't address the the pest. More pines taken by the Beatles than fires. Oh Mr. Obama ,or Trump have not considered this problem. Locals are saying they will just get replaced by aspens. Well they loose there leaves in the winter , now you have half as much oxygen being produced . I don't get it. Arvin

Rick, I definitely meet the age requirement! Would be interested for sure! Tried that rum &gun method with the youngsters once, myself. Ended up like you, my own pace, my own way.

Don't forget you need 3k in Sitka, firstlite clothing,$600 boots, sat phone, scouting app on your phone, tracking beacon with internet for posting selfies and giving hourly reports to wifey. Also a fully rigged out utv for riding the roads and places it shouldn't be while "hunting for elk". I'm only 55, but I codger hunt successfully every year. Just kidding guys don't get worked up, good luck out there, thanks for supporting hunting.

I know Colorado is closer and it will cost more per person with the fuel costs, BUT central Idaho is some of the coolest country that I have ever found. It also has quite a bit fewer folks, with that said we called in an elk to three yards two years ago. Ambush spots can be found all over Colorado. I’ve taken a nap on the side of the mountain and had a small herd of elk wake me up walking 10 yards away. There are also many units that are draw only but can be drawn every year with zero points. $600 or so for a tag and some fuel and food and you can be on your way. Many units are zero points with mule deer as well. Can be great either sex tags for Mulies also.

Another plus for Idaho is buy an elk tag and you can put it on a deer or a bear. It’s like buying three tags in one.

I don’t qualify, but we have been going every year for the last 6 years. I’ve had a shot every year, and killed two bulls. Ours is a DIY affair, and I plan $1000 for the trip. Last year tags were $650 with the ATV stamp. Both of the bulls I killed could have been killed with Trad gear. Some of the other shots, not so much.

Good luck to all. It sounds like a good time.

You obviously haven't hunted elk in Colorado in late August and early September. You'll sweat a lot, get rained on almost daily and be dodging lightning bolts in the mid afternoon hours. Finding a wallow or seep in a great advantage and as Rick said, the right hide in the right place, is much better than pushing them out of your zip code.

We've got some nice elk hunting in the general areas of Southern Wyoming, additional cow tags too.
