Trying to catch up on some missed hunting.
Going this weekend, next weekend, skip a weekend, and then the last weekend of the season.

Thanks for the update Gary. Do you know the dates when the hunters dumpsters are open? We send $$ every year and I misplaced the paper with the schedule on it. Thanks in advance.

Lee.

Saturday was a beautiful day! Saw 8 bucks at my feeder last night..... just not the “one”.
I did take a buddy of mine and his son. His son shot his first deer at 16. This buck was aged at 3.5 to 4 years old and was on the list to go. Happy for his son and to get this buck out of the breeding pool.

Just got back yesterday. Hunted the 22 an the 23. Deer were moving and a lot of bucks. My wife and mom both took nice big studs! Still have shooters coming in. They are going to the feeders like clockwork. Good luck to ya.

When did they rut?? We are between Brady and Menard and at best we saw a slow trickle rut.. Nothing full blown..

Its funny all the old timers in the area say "wait until after Christmas. Thats when the "really big ones" start chasing does"..

In 20 years I have never really seen this activity take place..

The peak of the rut for us was Thanksgiving week (SE corner of the county). The second rut will be one month later when the does that didn't get bred then come back into cycle.

I don’t know about you guys, but this season was one of the slowest I have had in a very long time. Mature buck AND doe sightings were down. My thoughts are that it was the perfect storm in that we received 20 inches of rain before the season and the deer did not move much once it was time to hunt. We also had some wind turbines come up west of us, so don’t know how much that impacts things or not.

That mimics what we saw on our lease.
The only bucks I saw worth raising my bino's for were all 3.5-4.5 yo 8's. and they were few and far between. Very few deer worth zooming in on game camera either. In hind sight I wish I would have hunted the rut weeks harder as I didn't think the sightings were going to go down to squat towards the end of season.
I did finally see a lack of acorns this week, have been seeing them under the oaks up until now.

I just got back from a slow weekend myself. I’ve seen one mature deer all year. Young deer all over the place but even a mature doe is hard to come by. I’m looking forward to spring turkey hunting.

Haha, forgot about the does.

Looking for a swayback was equally as hard no matter the sex.

I did get to brake in my 10 on a gift of a doe on Saturday.

She went 110#, so wasn't too shabby.
(She was slightly quartering away, bullet broke offside shoulder/leg)

Good deal. We had a 4.5 year old 7pt at the feeder this morning. My girlfriend took a long shot at him as he was about to disappear until next season and missed him. Hopefully next year will produce some better quality.

Crappy year all around.
Too wet and not enough cold. It was near 70* this closing weekend.

Just throwing this out there for comparison......
We have a 100 acre plot planted with winter wheat.
This year the average deer count feeding on it was 3.
Last year we had an average of about 80 deer through out December.

Menard hunting this year was very strange to say the least. Bucks dominated the feeders all year, All our does disappeared and we were overrun by hogs.

Must be some UFO’s in the area sucking them all up when no ones looking.

Thanks, that number is based on somewhat fuzzy math. I didn’t re-zero the scale at first, it was set where the previous user had it. I took this pic with her elevated and thought, that’s too much.

I lowered it back down and zeroed without disconnecting the gambrel, but with no hanging weight and she registered 114, so I deducted a guessed 4# for the gambrel and s hooks.

Just curious if anyone got an exceptional buck this year?
I only saw one that would of been a shooter with my bow, but didn’t pull the trigger with my rifle.
I think he will be “exceptional” next year and was seen the last weekend of the season.

I killed a good one on our place in October..
The rest of our "good ones" either disappeared or got shot by the company lease next door.. Again we passed some that we shouldn't have. Live and learn. But we did kill a couple of nice Black Buck...

I would say that I had one that was a really good 8 with an abnormal point on his base, but nothing that was a standout. We seen very few 10’s and the buck I mention here was MIA after the bow season.....hoping to get him on camera after the season.

Reports are the same from across the county unless you were feeding 20% protein free choice year round. The problem was last spring was really dry when antler growth was at its peak. It started raining in August and conditions are EXCELLENT now and should be through the early spring which will give antler growth for next season a jump start. Lots of green pickings across the county and burr clover should have a bumper crop.
It was just an bad year for antlers in Menard County but next season should be much better...if it will keep raining.
Adios,
Gary

In preseason I had my best group of bucks since I bought my place 4 years ago. like always they vanished right before bowseason started. I kept pounding the feed to them and was fortunate enough to take 2 decent bucks that I was very familiar with and just so happened to be on back to back days!!

The previous 4 years I usually only had 1 maybe 2 deer I was willing to take but had 4-5 this year. my place is small 122 acres and I have been very selective over the past few years and let many walk. the two I was fortunate enough to take were not giant by any means but for my little place and all the hard work ive put in to it ill take it!!

The dang hogs are in full force!! I can just about shoot one every sit now

my good buddy MenardCountyBow is gonna post a few pics for me!

Nice bucks DT50! Looks like your selectivity is paying off. I think I would consider those Hill Country giants and those two look like they are eating well.
