Default Y'all don't forget to get your Flu Shot!

Free or under $25 bucks. Painless and takes less time than trying to decipher on Pushbutton2 thread!

And no, you don't catch the flu from getting immunized

Is there any actual evidence that flu shots help?

I talk to people every year who got the shot, and got the flu at some point. Some who got the shot and didn't get the flu, some who didn't get the shot and got the flu, and some who got neither......and it always seems like an even split.

I've never had the flu I don't guess, I've got the shot a few years, but usually don't....

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

I have been getting them for about 6 years ( knock on wood ) I haven't had more than a sinus infection since then. I got young kids in school and they and my wife get immunized also. My wife never did until about 3 years ago and a trip to the ER for the flu. After you get the "real" flu, you'll do what you can to never get it again.

Had a buddy almost die and spend a week in the hospital from it. He was in his late 30's. ymmv

Its been 10 years since the last time that I received the flu shot and 2 months after that I had the flu. Last years flu shot only had around a 30% success rate. Nope not getting the shot again this year.

I get mine every year. Main reason I get it is because of my dad. We spend a lot of time together deer hunting and at 85 years old I do it to protect him from getting the flu from me.

A guy I work with almost lost his wife this year in bcs to the flu shot. Not just speculation but a diagnosis from her Dr. She is in her early 50's and could possibly never be 100% again. She went into ICU about a week after getting the shot with partial paralysis and other issues. She has now pulled through but is going from the hospital to an assisted living situation to rehab all of her motor skills. Needless to say I will not be joining those of you who are willing to take a voluntary needle!

I’m kind of like a dog. Once I’ve had my baby shots, no immunizations for me unless I get sick, and then I’ll take a medicated shot!

Had three when I was young. Got sick each time. Never have gotten one since even at my doctor's urging due to my heart history.
Last year I got the flu. It wasn't so bad except the recovery time. I was beat down for weeks.
Then my blood pressure had an unexpected rise. My medicine was adjusted to compensate but doc says one could be related to the other.
Getting a flu shot next week.

I stop getting the flu shot after I missed it a few years and didn't get sick. I was always getting sick after I got it. After doing some research it does a number on your immune system in a bad way. It has less than a 50% chance of working and that's a generous number. It can't and hasn't been proven to work and it even says it might not work. I'm not buying into the fear mongering that goes on in the USA anymore! All about money, not health.

Anything can happen, you just have to weigh the risk. It's a gamble either way.

Ironic I know three that have gotten Guiillain-Barre, none that have died.

Speaking of a gamble, what percentage of those that died from the flu fell into high risk to begin with? Guiillain-Barre doesnít have a high risk age segment

My ex FIL was the deputy director of the FDA and is a big time influenza dr in the medical field. He says to get the shot but also says there are so many strains of the flu that the shot is minimal in being effective at best.

Just because you get the shot doesn't mean you won't get the flu. It does mean you will be "less" sick. This is especially true for young kids and the elderly...they're the ones who die every year frim complications.

Flu shot makes most people get the flu. They offer em at work every year. Every year half of em are sick as dogs the next day. Been watching it for decades. Children maybe. Healthy adults, hell no. Big pharm is riding you good. Elderly? Well if you are so old and sick that a bad cold is gonna take you out; itís probably your time to go.

I know there are a lot of thoughts on vaccines on this forum. As someone in health care I highly recommend getting the flu vaccine every year. There is a ton of evidence that they decrease infections as well as the severity of infections. All you have to do is look and the evidence is out there. It tends to benefit the most susceptible in a population (younger, older, immune compromised, pregnant women). Also, if you get the vaccine you can help stop the spread to your loved ones/co-workers etc. Yes, sometimes the vaccine is not a good match for the circulating strain but that is often a 'best guess' based on strains in other parts of the world prior to our season. Even when it's not a great match you can still get some benefit by lessening the severity of the disease. The harm of the flu vaccine is almost zero.

Let the comments flow...

plus a buddy of mine put it as succinctly as possible. he said, the flu shot isn't about you. it's about reducing your chances of becoming the carrier of a ticking time bomb for kids, elderly and the immuno-compromised.

Flu Vaccine is based on LAST years strains folks. When we see a flu pandemic, epidemic, whatever you are comfortable with calling it...it's a "genetic shift" of the virus that produces LARGE population scale infections. In other words, the virus mutates so the vaccine may or may not be effective.

Past career after the LEO days + Medical cross training, I spent close to 15 years in the biotech industry, working for the company that marketed Tamiflu...so guess I can say I've read more clinical investigations on Influenza, TYPE A which is the most serious strain the uneducated media portrays. Type A Influenza is not the "poop throw up" virus, it's the respiratory FLU that can lead to secondary infections and take your life...again, primarily with the elderly or those who have existing chronic medical conditions.

The FLU shot is important, but as for our family, none of us gets the "shot." The key to flu symptom precautions is IF you get ill, go see your physician immediately. Sudden onset of body aches, high fever, malaise (no energy and overall feeling like poop,) head ache, eye pain (like a headache behind your eyes) are immediate indicators of TYPE A Influenza and if you have another existing medical condition it can be a bad overall outcome. Blood tests can confirm the TYPE A INFLUENZA but these days any competent physician is able to diagnose this severe type of Flu...not so several years past.

Tamiflu will be most effective IF you start treatment within 48 hours of onset of symptoms. It can "lessen" the duration of being sick thus the importance of NOT sitting around to see if you will get better.

Hope ALL will avoid it this year...good luck and stay safe!

I got mine today, and I will tell you there is one reason and only 1 reason why. Last year I didn’t get it, and I came down with the flu. And frankly all the chills, body aches, headaches and fever paled in comparison to the nagging my wife gave me. MOST MISERABLE I HAVE EVER BEEN that I couldn’t suffer in silence.

Somehow it escaped her that my son AND daughter who DID get flu shots also got sick.

I may get it again this year, but at least she can’t nag me
