Default Cabin Build - The Catfish Shed

This is gonna be a long running deal here. We are starting the construction of a replica late 19th century Texas cabin overlooking the stock tank on the family ranch. The crew consists of my father, mother, myself, and my good friend Mott - the good thing is that Mott is a carpenter by trade. This cabin will be almost entirely built of reclaimed material. We will put new sheet iron on the roof and have a few new pieces of dimension lumber - mostly for the floor joists, etc., but walls, floors, windows, doors, porch posts, etc., will all come out of our current "junk" inventory.

As we progress, you will see that this will be a unique structure, which is what happens when you build with what you have on hand - we call it "quality redneck". When you look at the "plans", like us, you will wonder if Frank Lloyd Wright started out like this.

As of now, we have the blocks set - they are a lot more straight now than what is shown in the pictures, and construction is to begin this Saturday. This is gonna be a lot of fun, and I will post pics as things move along. Following are some to get us started.

Default Some of the critters around the place

Some of the critters running around the place, and the tank when it looks better. Right now, the tank looks pretty rough - down about 6 feet. However, she was built in '67 and hasn't gone dry yet.

Got off to a pretty good start yesterday, and got all the floor joists done. It is all square and level, so now it is time to start going up with walls. One thing for sure, it was really nice when the cool front moved in around noon.

I only know one other Mott besides me. He's my cousin. I was just wondering if the Mott that's helping you is him? His name is Marshall Adams. We're both named after the same Man.

You got the right Marshall - and I didn't know there was another Mott out there. BTW, you guys are named after a great Man. I knew Mr. Adams for many years and thought a lot of him.

I haven't updated in a while, but we got a good bit done last Saturday - got rained out Sunday, which is a welcome road block. Not really much to show for as far as "going up" this go around, it was all about tying the foundation together. Got lots of bracing done between the floor joists and set a solid row of blocks to set the divider wall from the bedroom to the living area.

Should be going up with the walls on the next time out. For the exterior walls, we are going up similar to a log cabin style. We have a bunch of 3" wide laminated tongue and groove material that was made for a big church. It is made from a 2 x 6 sandwiched by 2 1 x 6 boards. This set-up should make for one really solid wall. I will have more pictures of the wall material come this weekend.

Started going up with the exterior walls. Stopped at this height so that we can start framing for the windows. Also want to set the bracing for the vertical corners to get them plumb.

On the corners, we are nailing in some big spikes. Total cost for the spikes = $1 for a half keg - Pops was pretty proud about that buy.

Updates: Put in a few hours on Sunday. Beverages in hand, we braced our corner posts. After that, we framed and braced the rough openings for the front door and the two front windows. Also got four of the side windows framed and braced - still have one more window for each side to frame in and brace, then move on to the back wall. The back wall will have a door in the middle, with a window on each side - so it will be a mirror image of the front wall.

I know it seems like we are bouncing around a good bit on the we are going up with different parts, but the reason is to get the most use out of the material we have on hand. I am really looking forward to moving ahead next weekend.

And thank you to everyone for the nice comments posted.
