I've usedů

West
Red Chain
Record Rack

Mixing in a little corn with the protein on new feeders.
Straight protein on ones that have been out previous years.

We use whatever the local feedstore (Brady Feed and Fertilizer) carries which is Livengood 20% deer protein. They also carry a 16% protein and Mr. Buck, which is a soybean/corn mix. We just feed the 20% Livengood deer protein and cottonseed this time of the year and run our corn feeders thru turkey season.

We simply use the roasted deer blend from Waller Rice Drier
It's roasted soybean/corn mix. We have it mixed to 22%

20% is good right now but after march I wouldn't feed anything more than 16%. A few of my friends are switching to ADM they have had good results with it!

I know nothing about protein, but want to start in the near future. Sorry for the ignorance, but what is the logic behind this?

as a supplemental feed - it helps keep body weights up especially during droughts. If fed in enough quantity it helps with the development of the horns

Think he was referring to the changes in percentages for different times of year, not the general use of protein.

Yes, I meant the change in 20% to 16% at different times of the year. As opposed to 20% year round

Has anyone tried Producers Coop in Bryan, Texas protien mix? It's a 20% pellet. We bought some the other day to try. It was around $9.50 a bag. Everything I've found in Lufkin is around $15 a bag. We buy all our cow feed from Producers so it's no trouble getting it.

I do not know about pricing, just know they are dealer for L&E. The keep L&E bulk and bagged as well as a private label IIRC. There is another large L&E dealer down at Fredonia as wells an L&E store in Llano that keep both bulk and bagged feeds. There is an up charge I am sure due to freight to get it to them from below SA at the mill. IIRC I think all 3 stores I listed have bulk trucks/trailers to fill feeders also. Bulk is generally $25/ton or so cheaper than bagged deliver per ton price comparison on most feeds.

The above post explains TDN % which is a huge factor. For 1,000 pounds of feed with a TDN of 65%, you are only getting 650 pounds of digestible feed to the deer. In comparison, a feed with an 80% TDN, will get you 800 pounds of digestible feed in 1,000 pounds fed...

Use that factor when calculating feed cost and the cheaper made feeds become less attractive to use.

Because of that, we use L&E and mix in some corn and roasted soybeans.

Livengood has a store on the south side of San Antonio. 4647 Roosevelt Ave.

I have fed Livengood (I usually get it at Oasis in Uvalde), Antlermax, and Mummes Wildlife feed and another type I get in Del Rio (has a big buck on the bag .

The deer suck it all down, I personally don't feel it makes that much difference. But I'm just a guy hunting a low fence lease, not expecting a 200" deer.
