I got the tree off the camper cover and I don't think it's even going to leak!! So that's good. But I work tonight then I'm off until Wednesday, and unless the weather changes it looks like it's gonna rain the entire time. Was really wanting to hunt!!

Good news about the cover. I haven't figured out hogs all that well, but this damp, cool weather had the deer, rabbits, and squirrels moving alot during the breaks today near us.

Lol true!! I kept 7 good eaters. I got broke off a couple times and lost a good one at the bank. The river is up and the cats are in the creeks. Makes it hard for me to focus on anything other than fishing!!

But if it's not raining tomorrow evening I'll try to stick a pig!!

I had an interesting day yesterday. I came about as close to getting hurt really bad as you can get and walk away from it. I was moving a 17ft ladder stand that had been on the same tree for years, and the strap broke right at the top with me at the top of the stand, standing on the ladder. I had put another strap about halfway up and sucked the ladder into the tree, because I was going to take that top strap off anyway. I just wasn't ready when it broke, and the entire top end swung off the tree to my left. I was able to catch the tree with my right hand and pull the stand back in, but it almost threw me off. I somehow managed to pull the back of the stand back in where it was supposed to be on the tree, and with the other strap I had put on somewhat holding it in place carefully climbed down. Not something I ever want to experience again. I did hunt yesterday evening, but didn't see any pigs. I had planned to do a live hunt, but I was kinda sick and just thankful to be intact!! I'm going to hunt this evening though and I'll go live on this one!! It's crazy how fast things happen.

I have several 15' ladder stands and have had to set up and move them around a hundred times over the years. It's always an adventure and a couple of times it was down right dangerous. I've even had to climb/slide down trees I was stranded up in when I had to make a choice between being a regular squirrel or a flying squirrel.

Still do it alone all the time but I'm definitely more cautious than when I was younger and more physically capable.

I don't think I'll hunt that high much anymore. Now that I'm setting up closer, it makes my shots pretty steep being up that high. I can't seem needing to get higher than about 12 feet now. 8-12 seems about perfect for a 12-15 yard shot. I got skunked yesterday evening. Tried to update, but for some reason I get very little cell service at camp but have pretty good service everywhere else on the place.

I have concluded the same about stand height. I really like the angles on an 8' but I think it is still a bit low (at least for deer.) I like the 10-12' range. 15 is getting a bit too steep for me. I had a similar conversation about stand height with a few other trad TBHers and 10-12 seems to be a common preference.

They are also a lot easier to setup too!

I like being on the ground the best, but if I need to sit in a tree, it usually won't be much over 12' high. The biggest whitetail bucks I have ever killed have all been out of the same treestand - it was 25' to the base of the stand! I really did not like the angle at all, but it was in too good of a spot, and that was the only place in that particular tree that the stand would hang right!

Yeah...and another thing I'll pay more attention to in the future is those straps. This one would just about crumble. If I hadn't put that new strap halfway up the ladder I would've fallen for sure.

I didn't really get to hunt much last week. My mom had to have a heart cath Monday, but all was good there so that was a blessing, just didn't have time to hunt. Then Tuesday I went back to work. I may try to sneak a hunt in Sunday evening if all goes well though!!

About to try again. I have a friend at work that lets me hog hunt on his place in the off season, and the hogs are tearing his hay field up pretty good. I'm gonna slip out there and try to find where they're coming in at and get set up for an evening hunt. I've got my Thermacell this time!!

Lol that's what it looks like...I set up on a feeder, and they're hitting it too. But there's no telling when. A lot of this property is open, it'd be fun to hunt out here at night when the moon is bright!!

They did!! I had a group of probably 30 or so cross the field, but about 60 yards out and they never came to feeder. I've got my light on my bow, but I've got court in the morning. About to pack up and call it an evening.

It's bad!! I've had permission to hunt this place for years, but just never have because I always have some hogs on my lease. The owner told me they were in there pretty thick, and told me to have at it. I went just to see some different scenery, but I didn't think it was gonna be like this!! I'll probably go back here on my next days off. He's got more pigs than my place for sure!!

I like to have a few too. This guy wants them gone though. He's got some thermal and an AR he's itching to use, but has some stuff going on keeping him from hunting much. Maybe I can shoot one with my bow before he starts wearing them out lol. But I don't blame him, he has some money at stake.

I have seen fields just like that torn up by pigs, that a tractor never touched! Once they find something they like, they devestate it!

This was all pigs. They've wrecked this place. It's about the worst I've ever seen!! It's dry, but you almost have to have 4wd to drive across it just because they have it rooted up so bad.

Wow. Well thermal gear, a suppressor and a good shooter can thin them but more likely just move most of them. For an issue that big a huge trap with a feeder in it is the best remedy and don't shoot them in the trap.

Yeah the property owner has thermal. I got a feeling at least some of these pigs are living on borrowed time. I'm planning to hunt at my place Sunday, spend the night there and then hunt this place again Monday.

I'm back at it today, at my spot. The hogs have been in the mud hole pretty good, and they're cleaning the corn up. Wind is pretty stiff but it's in the right direction. Mosquitoes are horrible!! Thermacell is working overtime today.
