Default Laguna Atascosa Rifle Hunt 2016/17

Anyone else get drawn?

I got pulled for the Jan 13-15 deer tag. I'm headed down that way for Nilgai meat. I will have my mountain bike and a trailer. Anyone biked through it before? Should I get some fatter tires to get through the sand?

Hopefully I can get deep enough to have some space and find a nilgai.

Is there any point on bringing a spotting scope? I know it is flat but are there any slightly elevated knobs to glass from?

My backpacking rifle is a 7mm-08, I have a feeling it would do the trick on a cow but need a little more gun for a bull.

Time out, I was thinking of the wrong gun. I don't know how that rifle compares to a 30-06 but a 30-06 Is plenty of gun for nilgi. So if it's anywhere close it should be enough. Sorry for the confusion.

Good luck. I'm looking forward to hearing how it goes.

You planning on hiking in or bike?

I drew the jan 13-15 deer permit as well. I'll probably bring a 7mag. I have a .338RUM but in heavy barrel. I plan on doing a lot of walking... This will be my first hunt down there.

A 7mm-08 will work, but you should use a tough bullet like a Barnes TSX or Nosler Partition.

I shoot accubonds with the 7mm-08, I'm going to get my 30-06 setup and bring that with me with 180 grain TTSX bullets. That should do the trick.

I've been impressed with them. I tried 6+ different factory ammo. My gun liked the accubonds and the Federal Premium with Nosler Partitions.

That's what I shoot out of my .270 and it did a great job on the nilgai last year.

You better prepare for chiggers! The hard part about ridding a bike is the salt grass. It's a killer on the legs.
Fix-a-flat or slim will help as well

I would be curios if this was the case. From what it says we can't even enter the place until after the 8am orientation the day our hunt begins.

The archery hunts allow the scouting day. I don't think the rifle hunts do, but I've never been drawn.

Scouting is open this weekend and next weekend. Saturday to Sunday both weekends.

I'll probably be out there since I live only 20 minutes away. With 250+ permits, it's going to get crowded so I need to find a few more spots off the beaten path.

I finally attached my trailer to my bike and put my GPS ram mount on the bike. Now I'm just praying it isn't wet when I head down there.

Thanks man. Its a great bike even though it is getting old.

Does the cyclocross tires with Stan's work that well? I was just planning on slimming my tires and bringing a spare tube.

This will be my first venture down there. I've used Stans for years and will bring slime tubes as a backup. I've never had an issue with Stans though.

I am going to bike to the west side of the lake and then hike it into the brush. Hopefully find a few trails to follow.

I have a few spots picked out I am going to head to first. I spotted them on google earth but you never really know until you get on the ground was is plausible.

I have a feeling we are looking at some similar areas. Looks like it is a good 3 miles over there depending on which gates are open.

How are you planning on biking with your bow? Attached to backpack?

I've been looking at option for my gun, not sure I want to buy a mount for my handle bars or not.

FWIW a bow attached to the handle bars makes a bike tough to ride, beats bow up on rough terrain plus the bow cradles will slip unless locked down super tight. I utilize a bow sling with quick detach clips. Much easier and quiet...

Bike looks good. I was wondering how tough it would be to ride with my rifle on the handle bars vs just slinging it over my back.

Let us know how well it works next weekend.
