I got drawn for alligator last year and had to skip the hunt. Couldn't get days off during a turnaround. I was sick. Took me 5 years to draw that tag.

It does seem like they get fewer and fewer every year. Especially with all the flooding this year I'm sure several more will be off the board.

But then you take a chance on getting drawn and having to decline. I did that a couple of year ago on rifle buck and lost all my points. That is one reason standby has gotten harder. Since its online, if you decline, they give the spot to someone else. Under the old system guys just didn't show up.

That's a rough stretch, maybe this is your year. I know under the old card system, we use to get picked once every 2-3 years for something. Now that its more popular and easier to put in, we have been hitting once every 4-5 years.

Over around 25 years we have been drawn probably 10 times. Have had some great hunts and seen some beautiful places. My favorites are just the free range hunts. Just sit in a creek bottom waiting on something to walk by.

I have been putting in for 10yrs and was drawn one time.

As far as the comment above "Now that its more popular and easier to put in, we have been hitting once every 4-5 years". I don't believe that the internet drawing system has been in use this long. I think this is only the 3rd, maybe 4th year in use.

3rd year. I have been drawn on hunts on the old and new system, maybe more often on the new system. I've been drawn twelve times in eleven years and my kids seven times (in one year). I have a lot of points accumulated in some hunt categories that should be easier to get (antlerless, management, feral hog) so maybe I can get drawn on one of those this year.

Wow! 12 times in 11 years, I guess I must not be living right.
I guess its luck of the draw, this is why I don't go to Vegas. I put in for many hunts and categories every year. I ended up spending a couple of hundred bucks each year. Oh well.

Your logic is flawed, the new system is only going on its 3rd year, I've seen the #'s chances of drawing are exponentially worse. IMO the system is broke, they need to fix it.

I haven't put in the last two years. Got drawn once in 6 or 7 years prior to that so I figured I'd let them work out the kinks before I get excited about this again.

Those are some impressive numbers. I've put in for multiple hunts every year. Like 6 or 7 hunts every year for about 10 or 11 years and last year was the first hunt that I've ever been drawn for. It was the main one I wanted so I'm still happy about it. Maybe this year I will get drawn again. I usually put in for some pretty sought after hunts so I expect slim chances.

I drew an exotic hunt at Palo Duro Canyon.

We figured them out on the second afternoon and missed one at about 500 yards. We found them again the third morning but then the wind got up to 30 mph and they bedded up in some big canyons out of the hunt area. It was an awesome hunt and I hope to somehow get drawn again. It only took about 10 years for that draw.

Good deal. Yea, I have only been drawn one time, Enchanted Rock and had a really good time. Saw some white tail and Axis, but never was able to get a shot. It was worth every penny. I have only hunted deer on three leases in my life, so a different place to hunt on even for only 3 or 4 days is pretty neat.

Maybe too much to ask, and maybe I missed it as a change for this year, but I have been applying for the last couple of years to the hunts with the worst odds so I can build up points while out of state.

Is it really too much to ask to be able to buy preference points like most other states that have a preference point system??????

It would make yalls odds better and cut down on people like me who get unlucky and win in a year that they are just trying to build up points.

I was just checking the draw hunt website to see how many loyalty points I have for mule deer. When you check your points there is a tab to the right that has the entry deadlines which are the new deadline dates and a column to apply. It will take you to that category with this years hunt dates. The catalog isn't out yet but the application page has all the dates.

So it's July 1. Does anyone know when the current hunt catalog will be online? The TPWD website says:
 When can I apply?

Applications can be submitted beginning July 1 up until the Application Deadline for each Hunt Category.

I agree, no out of staters should be able to apply without having purchased a valid license. This new system would be great if only it was run the way the paper system did.

That would not make near as much money. I'm like most and just really have a problem with a non-residents $3.00 (entry) being would the exact same as mine.

Hey guy's, how does points impact other people you list on your hunt entry. example. If I list a person with more points on a hunt category than I have will that increase the chances of me getting drawn? In other words if I submit an entry they have 10 points in the category and I have 0 points, does that increase my changes of getting drawn? Like wise..........If other person with 0 points list me for the same hunt category and I have 10 points, does this not maximize my changes of being selected. Sorry if this does not make sense.

They take the average for you 2 , and then that point average is applied for yall's entry. So 10 for you/ 0 for him and you apply together you have 5 PP's applied towards the applied for hunt

After several years with zero luck on the draws, I have decided to take my money elsewhere. CO over the counter. Success odds are lower for the OTC hunts, but at least the opportunity is there. 100's of dollars, and multiple seasons have been lost trying to draw a "high odd's" archery doe permit's in Texas (while also trying to the harder draws).

Something needs to change with the current system.

I'm in the same boat as you, been putting in for a decade and a half still never drawn buck rifle hunt and strongly considering taking my money elsewhere this year and for the foreseeable future until they FIX the system and make preference point more valuable or something. Points aren't going anywhere anyway if you sit out applying for awhile, checked my dads status in the system and he hasn't put in for a draw hunt since 1999 and still has all his points. The year to year trend in fewer hunts also continues, they did add the national refuge hunts, but the rest of the areas are offering fewer permits compared to last year. Fewer permits + more applications with the online system = terrible odds.

Unfortunately a true preference point system will never work in Texas. Point creep would cause the amount of points needed to draw to go up every year. There are just to few hunts to do true preference points. The best that could probably happen would be go back to one app per category and square the loyalty points like Nevada does.

Default 2016 Draw Hunts

I think I'm done applying for Texas hunts. Systems flawed, odds of getting drawn are horrible, and most of the hunts have bad reviews anyway. I'd rather take my chances fighting the crowds in Nebraska otc if I don't draw else where.

I drew Matador Archery Deer the last year it was paper apps. 2012 season. That was the first year I had ever put in and lucked out and drew that hunt. I like the idea of being able to put in for all hunts in a category but with the points system it doesn't work in your favor the way it is. But I can see what some of you guys are talking about with just being able to apply in one area per category. Better odds that way. I will continue to put in for certain hunts as the 3 dollar fee is to cheap not to and you never know when you could get drawn.

Question. When applying for a youth hunt....

Does my son have to log in and do a separate order for his hunts?
Do I register for it thru my account and add him to the hunt?
Do I register for it thru my account and it is assumed that I am bringing a youth who has no account?
