Default It's Time To Make This Porch Bigger, And Add Some FIRE!

We had our house built in a hurry back with the market and therefore, business...was crappy. I'd had enough of apartment life so we picked a small floorplan from one of my best builders and he made us a heck of a deal to build us a casa. We didn't add anything to the plan as far as size, choosing to upgrade a few things in the kitchen and bath. Blah blah blah....but that meant we got a little scrawny porch too, and it's time to do something about that.

1st we need more concrete.....

Things kind of ground to a halt here. Partly because I decided to paint it myself to try and leave a little $$ at the end of the budget for quality patio furniture, and partly because this is where I discovered my framer was great with structural stuff....but his cornish work SUUUUCKED! He got a ration of **** for it but I was already mostly done fixing it, so I didn't make him come back and fix it (he did offer).

I should add here that I DESPISE caulking and painting. HATE it..... Luckily my dad is very good with the painting bit and has a whole bunch of good gear for it. After 3-4 nights of caulking and fixing the framers screw ups and caulking some more, dad rolled up saturday morning with the gear and we got everything painted once, and some twice. I put the second coat on everything Sunday, while the Daytona ribs soaked up smoke.

Something about that pic makes them look out of line, but they aren't.

I'm going to buy the LED inserts for the cans tomorrow, and 2 ceiling fans with light kits.

We got 2" of rain yesterday, but it's drying up quick....I hope to have the material for the fireplace, and the stone up here Friday. I have to go out of town this weekend, so there won't be any progress until next week.

Somewhere along the way Pinterest gave my wife an idea for a coffee/card/eatin table to go in front of the fireplace. Her folks in Louisianna had a monster long leaf pine tree taken down a few years ago, and her dad had it all rough milled for 1X lumber. We brought some back with us a while back and I ripped some down on the table saw, and got my first lesson with the biscuit jointer.

It only took about 37 pounds of saw dust to get to this point, and I'm re-thinking my wood working career....

It will eventually be attached to the top of an old galvanized water trough for a base, the top will over-hang 10" all the way around. Still trying to decide what finish to put on it.

We have more than a metric butt load of that heart pine, so I'm gonna use it to make some doors to go under the grill in the outdoor kitchen when the time comes. I think I'm gonna build a door for a trash can to go under the counter as well......just when I thought I was getting out of the wood working business.!

Onward...

Them stainless doors and drawers are high dollar

You can see where the fireplace will go centered between the columns, it will be all stone. From the sides of the fireplace there will be 2 24" high knee walls that run out to each edge and around the columns. From the top of those 24" stone walls, there will be brick wrapping the columns to the ceiling.

Looks darn good.

That pinterest has cost more more money/time than all hunting shows combined. I'd pay good money for a firewall that could block it after the boss has had more than one glass of wine.

No no, only the "fancy" beers get bought in bottles! She has quite the collection, as the guy in charge of hauling off the trash around this joint, I am anti bottled beer....ill be picking her some up on the way home so she can have a bigger table.

I thought about that very thing, I'm not sure what I'd put in it though. I also thought about raising the table top an inch or so above the water trough and putting a light inside it to light the floor around it, but then I'd have a cord runnin across the ground.

I don't follow? Maybe you're seeing the leave out and the cricket on the roof where the chimney will go through.

I just finished wiring and installing the LED can lights, and dimmer switch.

The ones on the right look brighter because I left the white baffle/trim rings on them, and I put the ORB ones on the left.

Currently waiting on the lovely and talented Mrs Moser to get out of the bath tub and tell me which ones will be staying.
