    Camera Questions

As some of you know I will soon be headed on a fun filled government paid site seeing tour of one of the ruggedest counties in the world, aka getting deployed to Afghanistan.

Along the way I will be attached to a small element of agricultural specialist helping the Afghans get some things figured out on the Agribusiness side of things.

We have considered needing a fairly good quality camera to record our trip and projects along the way. So I thought I would turn to the experts.

The area is going to be very dusty, and transport will be in an already overly stuffed HMWVV that will be bouncing around over some of the worst roads you could imagine. So something large and delicate won't probably work. And a large Pelican case probably won't fit although something of moderate size, say backpack size or smaller, wouldn't be a big deal.

It would need to be easy to use, although I don't think that will be a problem with most everything having point and shoot modes. We're spending Uncle Sam's dollars so cost isn't too much of a consideration. Operating for a 10 day mission away from the FOB though needs to be a major consideration.

Anyways, any suggestions or ideas would be most appreciated.

I was going to recommend the Canon G10 as well. That little Pelican case that David recommended looks awesome too.

If you wanted a DLSR, you could get a zoom with a wide range like a 35-350mm or something like that. The G10 would be much easier to carry around though.

I would lean towards this camera though the zoom is not that great. Shockproof, waterproof would mean it should be fairly friendly to dust as well. The real thing you need to be careful about is the temps.

        if you want pocket sized

I was definitely looking at a dslr to give flexability with lenses.

          Just exploring at this point.

I think an DSLR would get pretty dusty internally as they are not sealed as well as the point and shoots. The sand is so fine and when changing lenses out you stand a really good chance of getting dust on the mirrors or lens or sensors.

Have you talked with anyone returning from there to find out what type of conditions to expect? Water proof case would do well for you if you did go dslr.
