    Mason Mountian WMA

My son drew a youth only tag for Mason Mountian to rifle
hunt on opening weekend (Nov 3-4) and I was trying to get
any information on the area that I can. I spoke to the area
manager about the accomidations there and managed to secure
a room for us at the lodge so that should help. It's a whitetail
only 2 buck hunt so we should see plenty of exotics but can't
hunt them. I've been sending in applications for him for youth hunts
for 5 years now and he was finally draw. We are both very excited
to finally get to hunt a place where he Might get a chance at a
good buck. Thank's in advance for any help, tips or info you guys
    can share. Later Baker

I bow hunted Mason Mountain a few years ago and would hunt it much different today. There are a few real good bucks on he place but the number of deer is way below the surrounding area. If I could and was hunting with a rifle I would hunt the middle pasture and as far from the Club house and checkin station as possible. There is a ravene back there the big ones really like. A good ground blind in some persimon trees should do the trick. Good Luck! L.T Bowhunter

Thanks alot for the advice L.T. I don't know if we will get
to pick where we hunt or not but if so I'll sure ask for the
middle pasture. I was hesitant to post a question about
gun hunting on a bowhunters forum but I'm glad I did. Again
thank's for the advice. I'm from San Angelo but I've lived in
Kingwood since 1998 and it's hard to gather information or
do any scouting from so far away. My son Logan and I are very
excited about him finally drawing a permit. I'm looking forward
to a great 3 days alone with him in the country. While I hope
he takes a good buck the hunting will be just one part of the
      whole trip. Take Care

I'll be out there a couple of weeks prior to your hunt for an archery hunt. When I return I'll pass along any information I get and let you know what it is like out there.

That would be great Steve. Thanks alot and Good Luck on your
hunt. The wildlife bioligist said they have some nice 140-150 class
deer there this year. Later Baker

There are several 300-500 acre pastures. A group of 3-5 hunters will be assigned to each pasture. You can't choose the pasture, but the hunters within the pasture get to roam freely in the pasture, so get to know them and work things out. You'll drive your vehicle to your pasture, 4WD will get you more places.

Figure out the main routes into each pasture and don't hunt there, as traffic will be heavy, try to get a little bit away from the main gates.

I've hunted there 3-4 times, big deer, lots of exotics. I've hunted Turkey and S Voca. Very nice. I've seen large deer in Middle, but that gets a lot of traffic.

Guys that run the place are great people. Jay, Mark, Kelsey and some others I forget their names.

At the orientation, you'll see on the slideshow a deer I got there on a guided whitetail hunt.

Yes, deer numbers are lower than surrounding areas because of all the exotics competing for habitat. Every pasture has bucks in the 125-135 class range.

Sleeping quarters are very nice with full kitchen. Its a very well managed facility. Bring your own linens.
