Default Melanistic Buck

This buck was killed on one of the places I hog hunt---I've been hunting a place down the road about a mile for 7-8 years and have never seen or gotten a pic of one like him. My cameras also run 24-7 from Jan-Sep at the place he was killed and no pics there either.

That's awesome. Do they have a special mount planned for it?

We've got a doe like that on our property that we've watched for the last few years. It'd be cool to get the hide tanned. Name: IMG_9084.jpg

I believe the hunter said a full shoulder mount plus tanning the remainder of the hide.

That is one of the rarest of all abnormalities in the whitetail world. A few years ago I almost got on the Freeman ranch outside of San Marcos. I would have gotten on the place, but they had 10 pages of rules, one being you would be fined $10,000 if you shot a melanistic buck on the ranch. Don’t shoot anything late!

Central Texas has the highest concentration of melanistic deer in the world.
Strong populations around San Marcos

We have quite a few melanistic does here in Bulverde. I've never seen a buck. One of the melanistic does had a melanistic fawn a few years ago.

I shot a small 6 pointer that was just like the buck in this post. It was in the late 80's right where the TPC is off 281. We saw several does like it over the years.

When they breed do they pass on their melanistic genes often?

I live in Bulverde as well and I can remember there being a few in our area for a long time. Never seen a buck, but several does. They are beautiful deer.

We have a buck on the comal bexar county line. Saw him a couple years ago as a fawn. And he reappeared this year. But he was still to young to shoot

Thanks for sharing.
That area of Texas seems to have the market cornered on “black” deer.
I saw two in Buda (Doe and fawn). 55 years of hunting and watching deer all over Texas and the only ones I have ever seen.

Pretty good number in Caldwell county along Plum Creek near you in Seguin. Dr Baccus (retired wildlife professor at SWT) did a lot of research on them in that area.
