I got an amazing deal on a 19' ranger that had been sitting up for a few years. I had to put a good deal into it, but I paid cash, and it's there when I want to go fishing. The paid for boat gets my vote. It's shocking how much people will finance on a boat. And how much they cost new these days.

That being said, I hated to see it go and thoroughly enjoyed owning it for 5 years. Of course, there is cost associated with maintenance and repairs if you break stuff. I was pretty scared when I bought my boat because of people saying this all the time. Initial cost was a lot because I needed lines, life vests, other safety equipment, recreational equipment upgrades that I wanted to do, etc, etc. But I can assure you, I spent WAAAAYY more money on fishing gear and tackle than I did on upkeep of my "crappy" Tracker. I guess to each his own. I'm pretty **** about maintenance and upkeep, so maybe that's why my boat didn't give me any trouble. I'll own another boat at some point.
Meant to be funny. Boat is not an acronym.

My suggestion is as matchejm said and to check out every boat that you are interested in and go from there.

Good luck.

Boats are expensive to buy new, built to your specifications and are expensive to operate, maintain, and repair. But fishing and hunting are my passion so it don't hurt me that much to get what I want.

Tran Sport 24' SVT Cat, 250 Suzuki SS.
Transport is the cats meow of catamaran boats. Donny tran is a great guy with great customer service. He helped me with my flats cat. My next boat will be a trans cat.

This x1000. I've fished on a lot of high dollar boats and nothing beats a good all weld! I want a 14-15' one with the biggest motor possible. Scoot right on out in the bay, bayou, intracoastal.

There isn't a perfect boat! Just one close enough for what you do most of the time! I would need at least 4 maybe 6 boats if I had the perfect boat!!

If we are dreaming I would have a 60x120 shop full of boats. Everything from a mud boat to something to take me offshore.

Like has been said, there ain't no perfect boat. What there is, is a best boat for your needs. I built this boat this year from a 1984 1660 duracraft hull. Ideally I would like it to be 18-20' but I got this hull for free. I run the bayous alot, jugging, trot lining, frogging, flounder gigging, kid riding, and bay fishing. This boat works good for all of the above. It leaves a little to be desired in the bay as I have to choose my days depending on water conditions but it does it all pretty well. Except flounder gigging/bowfishing. That's only because it's not set up for it yet. It's a work in progress.

I'm pretty much satisfied with what I have even though the motor is giving me fits right now. Come to find out the dealer I bought this from last year basically lied about servicing the motor.....bad on me for not asking for a service sheet....but that's another story all together.

I love my xpress h20 bay I just got. It rides real good in chop for an aluminum boat. That hyper lift hull is great. I had it in Lake Livingston last weekend in some pretty rough stuff and it handled better than I expected.

Clearly the perfect boat is different for each of us. For me it's my 22i Class with a 250 SHO, and an Ultrex with iPilot Link, and Helix 10 SI Megas at the trolling motor and at the console. No poles needed.

This is why no matter what I hang onto my cajun special. Have had a few thoughts of straying from it. But it is literally IMO the perfect 2-3 person rig for inshore, lakes, and rivers.

17.5x60, Mod V, 70hp with jack plate. Can go anywhere, 40+mph. Run in about 6", pole through about 4". Can't even tell you are towing it behind the truck, fits in the garage. And been paid for since 1998!

I have an old (1984) Empire hull, 17 footer, with a 150 motor. I love it.

BUT, if I had to buy a new one right now it would be the Xpress shallow water or bay series. I have ridden and operated a few of these and they are very well built. For what you need I would go with Xpress.

Here is mine on the water. Bare bones but tough, that's what I need.

I really enjoy my Ranger Riata Fish & Ski with a 150 Yamaha and 55lb trolling motor. I use it to fish for bass, chase crappie, and run jugs. Then when the day gets really hot, we ski or tube until the sand bass start schooling.
It doesn't do anything as well as a boat made specifically for that purpose, but it does everything just fine. And I like to do everything.
I bought it when it was 10 yrs old for $12k.
However, I'm thinking about trading it in for that tub with the 14 nekkid ladies.

Everybody should own a fleet, each one specific for different applications....
