Suggestions please.
I need a new .22 rifle. I'd like it to be something that I'll enjoy shooting and that my kids can shoot when they're a little older. I am ok with a higher price if it's a quality, long lasting gun. |

Semi or bolt action?
For semi, its hard to go wrong with a 10/22. For bolt action, look into one of the savage mark II's. I have 2 of them (one in 22lr and one in 17hm2). They are a couple of the most accurate rifles I own for the caliber! Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it. - Mark Twain |

If you're looking for a .22 bolt gun, I would definitely take a good look at a CZ455. I have 2 of them. The Lux for open sights, and the "Tacticool" model. Both are excellent shooters.

10/22 it is as cheap or as expensive as you want.
I took the one from my childhood, rebarreled, restocked and retriggered it.....now it shoots sub MOA at 100yds. |

I'll jump on the CZ wagon as well.
If you can find them, look for a 452 or what's a little more rare is the 453 Varmint...a slightly heavier barrel some of which are fluted with a single set trigger. You can still find the 452 new in the American or Ultra Lux but the varmint is a little hard to find and climbing in value since being discontinued. |

I agree. Browning makes a nice 22 lever gun. Tons of fun to shoot. If you want to get into mods 10/22 is the way to go. |

I inherited my grandads browning lever action. Super accurate and super fun to shoot. I shot my first squirrel with it and probably a million rounds through it growing up. Still doesn't miss a beat! I would definitely consider one of them

77/22 or a cz455. Sake Quad or CZ455 precision trainer if you want to go all in. Maybe a Jarrett Squirrel king or a 40x

I really like the 10/22 and the takedown is pretty handy. With that said the Savege with the Accu trigger that I have is a real shooter. I usually pick up one of those two. I would make sure and get a threaded barrel, but that is just me. A 22 with a can and sub-sonic is great for picking off varmints.

+1 or 2 for the CZ and Savage .22 LR. Two of the most accurate .22 LR's I've ever shot, even compared to my 'custom' Ruger 10/22.

I don't know what you budget is, but if I were in our shoes my opinion would be to buy a good clean shooter pre 64 Winchester & have them shoot open sights. The gun will hold it's value in both $$$ & sentimental.
Good clean shooters will run $500-$700 Look at these: Model 61: Pump (no hammer) Model 62: Pump (hammer) Model 63: Semi auto...maybe the best ever built. |

For a run of the mill bolt you could get a Savage, CZ or Ruger. For more money you could step up into a NULA, Cooper, Anschutz or custom.

For the money, I like the ruger American rimfire. It uses the 10/22 flush mags. Then you can buy a 10/22 too.

I have several .22lr's. I shoot my savage fv-sr the most!! With cci quites & a can the thing is an absolute varmin anilalator. I've taken coons with it out to 80yrds with it, with the can can on it at 80yrds the you can take several coins before they even know what is going on.

I am always on the lookout for a shooter/truck gun in those models if the price is right as well. I stole this one IMO & it just arrived yesterday!! Of course mint / perfect ones & you include the grooved receiver, it's a whole other ball game. Don't get spooked with the price you see here vs a shooter. http://www.gunbroker.com/item/646489314 |

If you can find one, I highly recommend a tube fed Weatherby. My son has the one my father had and it's an absolute tack driver.

LOL The OP purchased a CZ. ![]() My wife's CZ 452 isn't no slouch. Here is a picture documenting the accuracy before, during and after I cut/threaded the barrel. These are all 10 shot groups at 40 yards. Nothing was done other than installing the barreled action into the stock and remounting to scope between trips to the lathe. Notice there is a slight change of impact but still a tight group. ![]() |
