Took a little road trip with the 4-wheeler on the back this weekend. Fuel mileage was about 1 mpg lower than before the flatbed, but it was definitely a softer ride. Im concerned that the front may be a little light though. Seems a little light and kinda walks on rough road. What would be the best way to try to regain the steering characteristics? Would it help to remove the leveling kit from the front?

Nice work men! At one point in my early metal fab career, I built wrecker beds. Yall did some fine work there.

There are a few things I wish I had done differently, but as this is a very specific build and not much demand that Im aware of, I may just have to settle for what I have. If anyone is interested I would be willing to sell so I could build #2.

Ahhh!!! Just tried to put a 35 on (borrowed from one of the kids trucks) and it wont fit. Thought I had it all figured out, and paid extra for the fenders, but turns out, that's whats preventing me from running the 35. Dang it!

Got a bite on selling this one to a former student. He is bringing his truck by on Friday and we are optimistic that it will fit. If it does, this thread will continue for round 2. If not, then I may post progress of his build. Either way, there will be another build.

Well, I shouldn't have said that, because shortly after selling the bed to a former student, I traded the black truck for a long wheel base. I thought I would leave it alone because it is white, and every white truck I look at with a flatbed just looks like a company truck. But, I just couldn't help myself. Been gathering up a bunch of scrap together and started framing it out today.

I think I have a sickness.

Youvery well might, you know there is a whole lot of truck with flat beds already on them ready for purchase in Alto. But being a former welder, I understand the build vs buy mindset. Keep us updated

Yeah, but they want too much for those . Doesn't look like Im gonna get too far with this one though. The more I thought about it, the more I remembered the little nit-pick details, and the less I wanted to go through that again. I just don't have the energy for that now that the temps are going back up. It was bad enough in September that I don't want to be wrapping this thing up in July.

No joke, I know all about that. We ended up getting a porta cool for me and my helper cause we were on the south side of the shop that got all the sun. It made a difference but it started collecting more folks and seemed like we got less done with the cooler air than when it was hotter than a dog.

I'm not sure if it came to me in a dream or in those moments before you go to sleep that your mind races, but I woke up this morning with a great idea on how to get it knocked out quickly, save some money, and still look good. So, Monday the stock bed comes off and construction begins.

Man I really couldn't tell you. I have not built one that holds factory fog lights, so Im not sure what kind of fab work is required, or if we will have time to get to it this year.

Man I can't believe I missed this! Bed looked good on your old truck, but I was wondering which brands you looked at before the build. My '14 2500 lwb has a 8.5' CM bed and it sits pretty low, though it didn't come with a factory gooseneck

What about using like two of the square led pods in each?

Depending on the plate just get a hole saw and cut them with that for the fog lights. What we did for a full replacement one time.

Those are a piece of cake if you get the surface mount kind, but even the factory light shouldn't be too hard. Let me get through this build and finish my old man's grill, and see where we are in the school year and whether we will have time to finish it or not before school gets out. I don't mind finishing it up for you after school gets out, but I just won't have anyone to help with the heavy lifting.

Not a bad start for a day.

Its not as pretty underneath as the last one, but it was a heck of a lot cheaper being able to recycle the angle iron and salvage the channel. The only problem so far was that we underestimated the depth of the gooseneck trough, so we made it too tall to integrate the B&W. Nothing a little trimming and some reworking wont fix. Tomorrows project is the trough and the headache rack. Then its the skirt and plating the floor. Gonna save the toolboxes until the end if I can. Of course, the best laid plans...

That just depends on how much money you have in your pocket. My last one cost around $1300, and this one will be less than that since I am cutting some of the details and was able to use mostly recycled steel for the frame. How much that production bed run you (rhetorical unless you want to share)?

If I had the money, Ide be driving to Oklahoma for one of those Western Welding beds. But, since I have more free labor than I do money, I have to go this route. Plus, its kinda fun to me, and I get bored if I don't have a project occasionally.
