Default From Gate to Plaque

Some of you may remember the picture frame I made for my lease land owner from an old wooden gate I saved out of an old fence row on the lease. Here is the gate and the picture frame.

I wanted a plaque to mount my best buck from my lease.

So, I took a board from the gate, and removed all the nails.

I didn't have enough board width so I cut a square edge on the board and glued and clamped three together. This is weathered cedar and has some cracks all the way through it so I needed to put a backer board on it to hopefully prevent it "falling apart".

Glue is all dried. Used a belt sander with 80 then 120 grit and sanded the front.

Used the cut out to see what it might look like.

Used a drill to get a good round finish to the "notches".

Crud! Still had a piece try to fall off, Super Glue is amazing stuff!

I forgot to mention I used my band saw to cut this out and my bench top belt sander to finish the edges.

I then used a 1/4" quarter round router bit and made a shallow pass around it. After routering it I did one more all around sanding.

Then sprayed with Gloss urethane. Letting it cure over night and I'll try to finish it tomorrow. There is a pretty good early morning topwater bite right now so I'm fishing in the morning.

Looks really great...but tell me why you take real nice weathered wood and try to make it look like New wood. I really like the weathered look.

What kind of hanger are the antlers hanging from in the picture? I would like to try one of those for a set I have.

Yep, Skullhooker. I'll be mounting that to the front of the plaque.

Here it is finished. Mounted the Skullhooker base, and a little "test fitting" in the shop. Now I just have to figure out where to hang him??

I decided I had better get some quality shop time in before I get busy with education. I leave tomorrow for a week long officer development academy, then when I get home I start college classes for the summer!

That's a good job. I have limited skills, and very limited patience. I'm more the sledgehammer and crowbar type !
