74 years ago today in France

My wife is not "public" on FB but I did a little copy and paste. I'll try and post some pics as well. Pretty amazing day for her, her sisters, and her mother.

On the very spot we are standing in the first photo, our maternal grandfather, Gerald Gillies, lost his life 74 years ago today when the B17 Chowhound was hit and went down near the French village of Lonlay l’Abbaye. The Chowhound’s tail containing our grandfather landed on a farm, and today surviving members of the owners of the farm (along with their families) graciously invited my mother, my sisters, and me into their home. Several of them were small children when the plane crashed and have memories of it. The family along with townspeople and the mayor honored the Chowhound’s crew at the monument in the village and took us to the locations where the tail and the fuselage came to rest. They had erected a flag pole in the field where our grandfather was discovered and raised the American flag in his honor. It truly was the experience of a lifetime.

Salute! My wife's family has shrapnel fragments from her granddads time in a bomber over Germany. Amazing what happens over time, most think it's a eternity ago that bad men were in our midst, yet to realize it was only 74 years ago that some idiot wanted to rid our world of non-German.

Tremendous gesture and honor for a hero and his family. It is so nice to hear that there are still people "over there" that appreciate the sacrifices made to liberate them in their darkest hour.
