How do you acquire glass? I can get some cut locally but I'm worried about the edges being sharp.

Hobby lobby is your friend. It ain't cheap. But they cut and will fit it for you.

Yeah, a recessed lip (rabbet?) so you can put your glass, backer board, picture etc. in and it is flush.
