I have a 5000 watt generator for semi big loads but its heavy and cumbersome for one man trips. I've been thinking about getting one of the smaller 2000 watt invertor generators. I don't think I'll ever get the use out of one to spend $1000 on a Honda but would be willing to pay $500 for one. I've seen a number of different brands including Generac at Home Depot in that price range. Any experiences y'all can share? Being fairly quiet is a plus. I'll probably use it in the shed I want to build 100 yards behind my house instead of running power to it. It'll be used for running power tools and maybe a small A/C unit.

Don't know how you feel about Harbor Freight but I bought one of their generators the day before the hurricane. Not the inverter type, a 4000 watt, I paid $329 plus tax. They now have it on sale with a coupon for a little over $50 less. I was very pleased with it. I ran 2 freezers and two side by side refrigerators for a week nearly. It never missed a lick. For $279 you can't go wrong. Only weighs 100 lbs. If I never use it again, I"ve got my money's worth. Economical on fuel <20 gal used and pretty quiet.
Good luck.
Coupon is good the whole month of September.

I have a Yamaha 2000 inverter. It ran our camphouse lights and a battery charger just fine.
We lost power at the house and it would only run one fridge/freezer at a time, so had to alternate ever 12 hrs or so. I tried to run a 1" rock hammer drill and it would trip out instantly. It's light and handy, and pretty quiet.
