My son and I just got back from a bear hunt in the Gila national forest in New Mexico where we hunted with dogs. It was a lot of fun but it was a lot of work and I am so impressed with the hounds they use. My son and I both killed big boars that looked very similar in size and color. My sons bear lead us on a 3 hour foot chase through the mountains before it finally treed and my son was able to shoot him. We chased my bear for close to 5 hours on foot through some really tough terrain where no trees big enough for the bear existed, finally the dogs got the bear bayed up on the side of a steep incline where I was able to take him down. I will say this if you are thinking of doing a hunt like this, if you are not in good shape then get in good shape and if you are in good shape then get in better shape, this is a brutal hunt but also very fun. Of course some hunters have the bear shoot up a tree 200 yards off the road on flat ground but that is not my luck. The group we hunted with was great and worked real hard to get our bears and they even let my son have one of their Walker hound pups.
