New lens!!

Finally broke down and got the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 APO EX DG OS! Pretty excited to get out and see how much better it performs than my 55-300 f/4.5-5.6 nikkor lens. This thing is supposed to be a rocket in comparison. Couple quick questions, do you need to turn the OS to off before mounting/dismounting the lens? Paperwork recommends it but I know I will not remember to do it. And will a 1.4 teleconverter distort the photos much? I know it will increase my stops.
