Default 30mpg Tundra Coming!

Someone mentioned this on a comment on another thread so I looked it up to see if it was true. Sure enough, it looks like a new 3.5 Liter Twin Turbo is in the works for the next generation Tundra in '21. Rumors are that it will produce 450 horsepower with 500 pound feet of torque and get around 30mpg. If this does happen, I will seriously consider buying one.

That article is from May 2019...there are some more recent updates out there. I’m like you, I’ll buy it! They are getting rid of the v8 all together and will have a hybrid model and turbo model to chose from. I’m not sure if they will follow the diesel model like Ford and Ram, but that option would be good too.

30 mpg sounds really high. Ford already has the same engine essentially. It can get low to mid 20’s if your really conservative on the pedal. Interested to see if it can actually get 30

Last I read was '22....and no way in hell would I jump in on an initial motor release. I'll let somebody else be the guinea pig until they get all the bugs worked out.

Will they finally redesign the truck? I haven't been interested in a Tundra for years because it's a tired design. If they do a major overhaul other than than just a new engine than I'll be interested.

I totally missed the date on the article. I will have to do some reading on the latest info. Either way, it has my attention. I had planned on keeping the Tacoma for a while but if these hit the market next year I will be looking hard. I am curious about what the price point will be on a nicely equipped TRD 4x4.

I'm pretty sure that they are unveiling the new engine in a new design.

When we bought my wifes 4Runner a few weeks ago our salesman told us not to buy a tundra right now because the 22 will be a complete redesign. He was not exactly sure on the engine but he said they expect something with a turbo.

‘22 We start building them early next year. Still working on redesigning the plant to build them and the Sequoia. Going to be a game changer for sure.

Very skeptical but I hope it is true. Not sure how you make that much power and have something that heavy do that good on gas. I hope I am wrong as that would be an awesome truck.

Perfect

That should align right about the time for me to trade-in my '14

How will the power/torque compare to the 5.7?

GM of Toyota dealership and an accountant at corporate office I speak with often, nothing on the internet is verified and apparently no one knows what's going on with Tundra. As I do love my Tundra and 5.7 motor, its time for something. The kicked everyones butt in 2007 and havent made changes since.

This is what I wanted to hear. I want a tundra but the dated look/ interior and bad gas milage have held me back. Hopefully they don't plaster the name on the tailgate like the others.

Ford already has the 3.5 twin turbo ecoboost and I'm averaging 20. Thirty seems almost too good to be true.

It's a give and take on vehicles like that. 30 log, but in a regular cab 2wd with cylinder deactivation. Not saying it has then, since I haven't read any of the articles yet, but it seems too far fetched.

From what I understand it is not actually a totally new engine design. It is based on one of the already existing engines in a Lexus model with some mods added. At least that's the way I understood it.

For that power and mpg, probably some hybrid design. Volvo has some twincharged 4 cylinders that are 300 hp and 30mpg, and I know mercedes has some 400hp straight sixes that are turboed and utilize an electric motor for launching and near 30 mpg.

Car and Driver's write up on the 2021 mentions nothing about a new twin turbo or engine. Could this possibly be for the 2022?

Edit...article by OP say's 2022.

Your salesman is an idiot to turn people away from his highest volume sale unit in Texas for the next 1.5 years. Or...he makes more money off a 4runner and said that to steer you to it. I mean seriously...talk about cutting your nose off to spite your face.

He is talking based on resale. You might could make a good deal on a 21 next year but resale wise when the redesign comes out you will be way behind. Hes been selling Toyotas over 10 years he has a pretty good handle on things.

He would have sold us one, although inventory is very low right now. He was just saying that it would be better to buy one after the redesign.

Yeah, it's likely going to be a hybrid too. Hence the spy shots having the skirts down the side of it. Potentially it's covering the rear suspension, but I suspect hybrid more than coil overs. From what I've read and seen, it will be the same motor in my wife RX350, with turbos strapped to it. My friend at Toyota says everything being design is in prep for another democrat in the white house who will impose strict emission standards. He said there is already a DEF system standing by for the Tundra when the govt decides to put DEF on gas engines.

In 10 years, hybrids are going to be way more powerful than any diesel today, and we will wonder why we ever needed 6.7 liter diesels. Its depressing to think about that my 717 HP Hellcat will be obsolete.

Side note, I am not looking forward to the guys claiming they get 40 MPG with their truck...

Jason, I believe Toyota has already had that motor in production on the LS500h. I've read that they are offering a turbo on it for increased HP

Supposedly it is not a new motor. It is the same motor they are putting in the Lexus SUVs. At least that was what I saw a few months ago.

There is no official word on anything yet. I’d imagine they would have to go tt 6 to compete but I bet they keep the v8 too. I sure as heck would t buy a first year one even if it is a Toyota.
