    Info needed

Short back story: In June we went on an Alaskan cruise and my father in-law suffered a major heart attack one morning while we were in Glacier Bay, which is the second most remote place in the world comp we to Antarctica. Medical staff was great and God Blessed as he pulled through once they got meds on board. Problem was due to the area we were in they could not get him off the boat until around 4:30 pm and he had the attack around 9:00 am, airlifted to Anchorage where he had one stent put in approximately 12 hours later, so he had major damage.

Fast forward as he completed his rehab a couple months ago and has been doing great with his diet and exercise. He has been doing strenuous activity day to day without really any set backs and he dropped excess weight, but he is not obese by any means. He had his echo the other day and got the news they kind of expected, the damage to his heart had not improved any but had not gotten any worse, ejection fraction is around 35%. Doc told him he will need a defibrillator implanted soon and he goes for his consult Wednesday. He is kind of down because he won’t be able to weld anymore but that’s not the end of the world.

Just curious if anyone else on here has had any family or friends with similar situations. He is 51 and one of my best friends, along with my wife being an only child their relationship is very special, so I have been stressing about it way more than I should. I know I need to be thankful for the days we have with him still and to let go and let God.

I would love to have some input from y’all especially if y’all are close to someone in a similar situation, as I am done trying to research anything on the web. He is a tough old coot and can still outwork most even since the heart attack, but I am curious as to what his outlook may be as bad as I hate to think about it. Prayers needed fellas

A low ejection fraction like that can be improved. Stick with the exercise program. Keep the weight off and follow the diet. He may not get it into the high 50 or 60's but he can get to the high 40's.

Let your wife continue that relationship as much as possible. Sounds like you enjoy time with him also.

Remember this one thing, none of us will be here forever.

Count the blessings you have and fear not of the future.

    .....and God Bless America.

Sounds like you're telling my story. Except I was on a shrimpboat, alone.
Got to the ER 3 days later where I was told that there was nothing wrong with my heart and that Ma
ybe an aspirin burned a hole in my esophagus or something like that.[emoji21][emoji21]!!
So I went into the hospital where they ran things down my throat and up my other end for three days while all this time I was having excruciating chest pain. Finally after three days and finding nothing a cardiologist came and said that even though I had no symptoms he thought something was going on with my heart. Duh!! To shorten this story a little, I had an artery plugged and a blood clot. He put in a stent but now I to have an I F of 35%.
I was 71 at the time. That was 5 yrs ago and I'm in much better shape now than I had been in yrs. Anyone that knows me will probably tell you that I can keep up with a 40 yr. old, at least.
So don't worry about him, we aren't gonna disappear until our number comes up.

I had to leave work because I need 24/7 supplement oxygen. At 46 I can tell you it sucks. I’m really struggling with it.

Sounds like your father can still improve. Maybe he can get another opinion from a different heart specialist then make a decision from there.

Mine is a lung issue not the heart. To much black dust for me.

Sorry that you're having such a hard time. That's got to be tough. Is that a heart or pulmonary problem, or both?

My dad went through everything you described and a whole lot more. He lived another ~25 years before his heart quit on him.

One of my customers has a pacemaker (I don't know if it's the same thing as a defibrilator) and he still welds. The docs told him just don't use any thing with high freq like aluminum tig welding. He stays with stick welding now.

No they implied that I might should but I chickened out. Firm believer in letting a sleeping dog lie.
