Another hike after work. After living here 26 years I Ďdiscoveredí I can get to a county park entrance 5 minutes from home. Wear the 30# pack and do .75 mile each way, with about 650 feet of elevation change going in. 35 min up, 15 min down. Longer on weekends.

Itís getting easier.

My personal trainer Miss Sage leading the way.

Drew my muzzy elk tag in Colorado. Kind of interested in getting a bear tag if I get lucky early. Anybody have any experience hunting bears in September? Any tips?

I have walked up on several of them in La Plata and Eagle counties, but didnít have a tag when I did. I was told by the biologist that they are constantly traveling in September trying to put on the fat they need to survive the winter. Depending on where you drew, Iíd call the fish and game and ask them where they dump the problem bears if any.

One year in Sept I saw 9 different bears in 7 days of elk hunting. 8 of them were at water holes. Several hopped in and swam in the ponds while I was there. They were eating something called a chokecherry that time of year. Find areas with alot of them plus water.....and you should be in business.

Link with a pic of a chokecherry.

Effective use of decoys, especially cheap solutions like multiple burlap bags.

Since elk continually move, how long to stay in an area and hope vs. moving to snother spot.

Hmm...spike tags? I figured spikes would be protected instead of targeted. I don't have an issue with it as I would shoot one in a heartbeat if that was my tag. Just find it odd. I'm sure they have a good reason for them.

Good luck! Expect to see LDP's in September.

I think Utah also has a spike only permit, but I could be mistaken.

We're finally starting to get a few scattered showers the last few days, but it hasn't been anything to get too excited about yet. Weatherman is calling for an inch or so over the weekend though. That would be a great start.

Yea, they're ridiculous. They gave me two of those beasts for Spring turkey. Pretty sure I could have figured out a way to put my two spring turkey tags, my elk tag, and my deer tag on that same amount of paper or less...but at least we've got carcass tags again.

Just got off the phone with NMDGF. They said they'd cross that bridge when they get there. Apparently, refunds have to be approved by the ED. They neither confirmed nor denied.

LQ Wyoming tag for the both of us in a great archery and wintering area within an hour of home. The season goes until Nov. 14 this year and if no big bulls last half of Sept or Oct 1 opening day we'll wait for the snow and go in and hunt them as they flood down to the public land wintering area. This season should be very interesting for this LQ tag, big bulls should get taken, and quite a few if folks are patient.

I’m a newbie to western hunting. So i have some stupid questions. Wilderness areas are legal to hunt as long as they are in your GMU? Anything else special about Wilderness areas besides no motorized vehicles? Also, do you have to park in certain places when on national parks or wilderness areas? I’m not seeing many camping or parking areas listed on any maps.

I am in the same boat. My buddy and I are both still waiting on our tags. I contacted CPW, they said they don't consider tags lost in the mail until 30 days after they sent it out. They sent out tags on the 20th I believe, and re-issuance can take place.

Inside 2 months!!

It will be me and a buddy's first elk hunts. Both of us have been working hard to get in shape so that we don't handicap ourselves. Going OTC so the odds are already going to be tough. I'm down 35 lbs on the year and feelin pretty good, really been ramping up the training here lately. Been climbing steps twice a week in additional to hitting the gym and other cardio. Went up and down 1000 stairs with 90lb pack yesterday and going to keep adding weight as my body lets me until its time to head out. The way I'm looking at it is if i cant prepare for the altitude I can at least prep with a bunch of weight. Ready for it to be September already.
