You are getting good advice above about where to start with a bow.
I will add this; if you guys don't know anything about trad shooting, find some trad guys in your area to mentor you. Trying to "get it" from reading on the Internet is almost impossible, and having someone in person to help will greatly lessen the learning and frustration curve!
Good luck!

Nailhead, I have a Wing Gull that I've been considering selling. It's a 42# at 28" recurve and I believe is 56" long. It would come with 5 Beeman arrows and the glove that I use. Also has a spare string because I went down to Bob Lee's shop in Jacksonville and bought a new one and had the string silencer puffs put on it. It is literally quieter than my compound. Looking for 200$. Pm me if interested.

I'd suggest buying a good used 'made in USA' bow (well-known custom or reliable stock bows like Martin, Bear, Pearson, etc.) over the rash of cheaper imports that seem to be flooding the market these days. Some are ok, some not so much. Prices of used domestic bows are generally reasonable and if in good condition they will shoot well and have better resale value than the cheap imports if your brother decides trad isn't for him. I'd also recommend a longer bow, they're easier to draw and easier to learn on. At least 60" AMO for recurves and 62" AMO for longbows. Finally, the worst thing he can do is overbow himself. If only target shooting then 30-35# should do well. If he likes both targets and hunting then a 40-45# bow is light enough for learning and regular target shooting but still heavy enough for deer if the right arrow is used.
As mentioned in above posts, best to find a trusted/experienced trad shooter that can mentor you and your brother in the ways of selecting and shooting trad bows and arrows. It'll shorten the learning curve (and growing pains) by leaps and bounds and probably make learning alot more fun.Last edited by Retsbew; 10-24-2014, 07:57 AM.

Thanks again for all the help fellas! And I really appreciate the offers on the used bows. I just have this thing about getting someone something that is used as a gift. Call me crazy.
What about a stringer? Say we were to get the Sage or something like that, is a stringer necessary? I have heard mention of them from time to time.
Also, not going to disclose at this time whether he is actually getting one for his bday or not in case he decides to do some research and come across this thread. Sorry lil-brother you have to wait until this weekend to find out what you are getting.Last edited by Nailhead; 10-27-2014, 11:36 AM.
