First let me start by clarifying one thing for some of you folks.....
Yes, this was on a HIGH FENCE RANCH.
Ok, now the story....
I was able to squeeze in on a company bow hunt again. Me, my boss with his 2 boys and a customer of mine headed for the South Texas brush this past Friday for a weekend of fun.
My boss said i was good to harvest a buck up to 155" but after arriving he said shoot whatever you want. So with that in mind...On the hit list was any 1 trophy buck, a doe and a hog for each hunter.
Last time i went out on this kind of trip i was able to harvest a nice 14 point that scored 173" and change. So you bet i was pumped on this hunt.
On the first hunt i videoed a nice 10 point at 18 yards. Since it was the first hunt i elected to pass which turned out to be a good thing for different reasons. ^^^^Remember this^^^^
On this same hunt I ended up killing what i consider a trophy hog. It only weighed around 210 pounds but it looked like a beast!! He had some big cutters and a cape that was amazing. Got him at 22 yards and the Rage head did wonders on him. It penetrated through both sides stopping just outside the opposite side. The pic of the cape below will show you how tough these heads can be.
I never thought i would mount a hog but this guy triggered my interest so he's at the taxidermist now. Im sure Buckwild is going to do a fine job. The pics...
A still shot off my video camera just before the green fletching disappeared.
A tail gate pic
Im 5'8" 270 lbs and this dude makes me look skinny.
The mean cutters
The cape
Rage trauma
The next two hunts i saw zero and i was begging to feel a little pressure cause i only had one more hunt.
For the last hunt the rancher recommended for me to move to a tripod that had not been hunted all year so i did. Boy was that a good move.
Sunday morning brought foggy condition which i love hunting in. First deer to show up was a monster 16 point. Long story short i watched him for 20 minutes inside 15 yards and i he never came out to my shooting lane. He just walk around back and forth through the brush watching all the other deer eat and all i could do was watch him. At one point he stopped at 14 yards and i had a 1' opening at his vitals and attempted to squeeze and arrow through it but i got busted moving my draw arm by a rat 6 pointer that was under me bout 10 feet away. I elected to wait longer for a better shot and then it happen. The darn feeder went off and scared him off along with all the other deer. I quickly rough scored him around the mid 160's. About 10 minutes later most of them came back but the big boy never did. I watched a nice 10 point feed for 15 minutes hoping the big boy would come back but it never happen. I text my boss to let him know what was happening and he said shoot the 10 point and sit there to see if maybe the 16 point will come back.
I said what if he does?
The boss said shoot him.
You bet thats all i needed to hear so I decided to take him since it was the last hunt also.
Shot was at 18 yards and the Rage found its double lung mark with a complete pass through. He ran about 70 yards. Here are the pics...
First time wearing a leafy suit and they are awesome.
The entrance wound
You bet im very happy with this bow kill and he's gonna make a nice skull mount.
As stated before, letting that 10 point on my first hunt walk was a good thing. My boss decided to let his son sit were i videoed that buck and he got him. He's 11 yrs old and his killed many deer from spikes to 10 points but this one is his personal best with the bow. He is pulling 53 pounds and shoots a Rage 40K. He hit the buck a tad back and high but still caught the back top part of both lungs and cut the main artery. We inspected the internals closely cause we were all curious on what damage was done with that shot. We found him about 80 yards away.
Overall we had a great time and one heck of a weekend.
Thanks,
Ray Cedillo
