    German Smear technique info needed.

My wife loves watching HGTV show "Fixer Upper" with Chip and Joana Gaines.
Last nights show had Chip doing a German smear mortar process in the outside brick wall. Well the wife wants to try that on our home.
Our home is about 50% stone similar to below. Plan is to use white/gray mortar.

I can't find much online detailing the process, materials used.
Does anyone on the green screen have any experience with this technique?

I'm about to do this to my casa as well. Just get the color mortar you want, get a trial, start from the bottom and work your way up. Then go back with a sponge and wipe off the areas you want the brick to show. There are some videos on youtube.

Is white pre-mixed mortar available at Home Depot or Lowes or is it special order?

Not that I know of. Need white (Texas Lehigh) and sand. Big boxes sell the white cement but needs to be mixed with sand.

I've seen some homes in and around Fredericksburg with what I think the stone smeared.
Looks very authentic to the home built in the early 1900's

I suggest you pick a test area around back in case you don't get the result you are looking for on that stone.

Don't smear that stone, you will regret it. It is done on brick. We did it on our home that is red brick and it turned out awesome. You do the following:
                            - You get Alamo white masonry cement
                            - Mix to thicker than pancake batter
                            - Apply with trowel
                            - Let dry a little, then wipe off the or use wire brush to take off in areas you need to fit your look

Just my opinion but the German schmear is just as bad an idea as painting brick.
Unless someone has a better technique than the one that they displayed on the Waco show.
